Better Call Saul will feature a flexible timeline

Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul is now shooting in Albuquerque, and, even before the first season has premiered, US cable channel AMC has renewed the show for a second. Now, according to co-creator and executive producer Peter Gould, the show – originally thought to be a straight prequel about sleazy lawyer Saul Goddman (Bob Odenkirk) – will jump around in time and could therefore feature more appearances from the likes of Bryan Cranston.

Talking to the New York Daily News, Gould explained the reasoning: “One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on the show.”

If done right, this could be excellent. If done wrong…

I sure as hell hope this is done right. And I think we have every reason to think it will. It’s still Vince Gilligan…

They did a little bit of it with BB and it worked very well, but doing it consistently will be a difficult feat. That said, if anyone can do it, it will be Vince Gilligan.

This makes me even more anxious for this show!

I bet those guys Saul was talking about when Jesse and Walt kidnapped him will be part of this. I wonder if Vince Gilligan knew that he wanted a spin off back in season 2? If so then I guarantee this show will be made to perfection.

He wouldn’t have known in season 2 that Saul was going to become all that popular. I’m not even sure how popular the show was at that point. I watched it and loved it from the beginning but a lot of people didn’t get into it until binging it later.

Gilligan is great at filling in previous stuff after the fact. Remember the whole deal with the RV? Early on (I think the first or second episode) Walt gave Jesse almost all of his cash on hand - a few thousand dollars - to buy an RV. Jesse expressed disbelief that he would be able to buy one for that amount, but the next thing we knew he had gotten an RV and, If I recall correctly, there was no explanation.

Later (in the second season I think?) there was an episode that opened with a flashback showing Jesse blowing all of the money with his buddies at a strip club, and then, with the last little bit, buying what was essentially a stolen RV from Combo.

I doubt that Gilligan planned that far ahead in the first few episodes. He had no idea if the show would even succeed at that point.

So yeah, I like your idea that those guys will be part of it, but I doubt it was planned back then. In spite of that, Gilligan could make it work.

Yeah your probably right. It is pretty cool how he can even use Hank in episodes. He knew Hank was DEA in the episode of badger being arrested so I’m guessing Hank will be involved in this too.

I think I’ve binged it all of the way through twice. And I watched it every week in real time when it was originally broadcast. No doubt I will watch it again.
