based on a few reviews in some of the computer magazines, i decided that the maxtor one touch II external back up drive sounded like apretty good idea. i purchased one and took it home to set up automatic back ups that would assure that my data would be safe.
dropping the cd that came with the drive into the cd rom drive gave me an opportunity to print the installation instructions to allow me to carefully install the hardware and software.
installation went without a hitch. software recommended the full install, which i did. the only glitch at this point was the software’s inability to locate my broadband internet connection to transmit the registration. i proceeded. i came to the step instruction me to push the “one touch” button to start the back up.
a very slow data transfer began. three hours later, the hard drive crashed.
removing and reinstalling all hardware and software multiple times continued to result in a crashing hard drive. the last reinstall of the software made some apparently irreversible changes in some of my settings, and corrupted the shut down command. it is endless restart. if i time it correctly, i can shut down the computer by turning off the apc back up power supply.
BITE ME MAXTOR!
Dude, i hope you learned your lesson. I used to deal with Maxtor all the time, but i learned my lessons last year. As has been said before: If you buy shit, don’t complain about the smell
I use all Maxtor hard drives and I’ve never had a problem. I’ve found them to be the most reliable. I’ve had two WD hard drives take dumps. As far as I’m concerned, pay a little more and get the best.
And once again, we run into the usual issue with computer parts: some people think that Brand A is the absolute pits, while others believe that Brand A is the greatest piece of technological brilliance ever foisted on the unsuspecting public.
There seems to be very few pieces of hardware that don’t have a small army of boosters and another small army of detractors. It makes choosing equipment quite difficult.
I’m actually in the process of choosing an internal SATA hard drive as a second drive for my computer, and i’m getting a similar problem—contradictory reports about each different brand. In the end, you have to just take plunge, buy something, and hope it works.
<hijack> I’m wrestiling with a system with two SATA drives in it now. I think one of them is going bad, but I’m not positive. I went to Maxtors site to download their drive utility when it promptly told me that it is unable to test SATA drives connected to SATA controllers, and to connect the drives to a standard IDE controller to run the tests.
Wow, I was hoping we were past the days of reconnecting HDDs to IDE controllers to run a simple test. Thanks Maxtor…
Seagate has a program that can read through controllers. I’m going to try it and hope for the best.
i was not really able to determine if the maxtor hardware worked well or not. the dantz retrospect hd software was defitinely problematic. after a couple of days, i have most of my machine functional again. i can at least get it to respond toi the shutdown command. the system restore function is history though.
maxtor may make good hard drives, but their software (and tech support) suck!
