Bible verse help
4Love is patient and kind. Love is not **jealous **or boastful or proud or rude.

For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a **jealous **God

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
So God is Love, but God is also jealous, but love is not jealous. I’m confused

Is this sort of the “Do as I say, not as I do” type of leadership?

It’s more the two-faced abusive parent kind of leadership.

“Love is not jealous” (or, as some translations put it, “love is not envious”). So does that mean that if you love your husband or wife or SO, you won’t mind if they sleep around or have the same kind of relationship with other people that they do with you?

Probably because you’re plucking three lines out of context and treating each as an absolute.

Welcome to Christianity.

Well, right wing nut job prosperity Christianity, anyway.

Right, but let’s give that context.

The “jealous God” context is about worshiping other gods. The verse is saying that God doesn’t tolerate the worship of other Gods. You must worship Him only.

The “love is not jealous” context is in the context of saying that love is patient and kind. It is forgiving and understanding. So the jealousy referred to is some sort of unkindness.

The “God is love” context is talking about not falling for every single spiritual person out there giving teachings. It points out that the God they worship preaches love for your fellow man, not hatred. “God is love” in the sense that he sent his own Son to sacrifice his life for us.

I’m not sure that’s all helpful on its own, so I’ll give my interpretation of the above. The second verse seems to be talking about covetousness–being jealous of other people’s things. You don’t actually love someone if you’re constantly upset that they are better off than you and have stuff you don’t have.

The same book of the Bible that says God is jealous also says “Thou shalt not covet.” The compilers of the book of Exodus clearly did not see a contradiction in this context. So “jealous” must not mean the same thing as “covetous.” Instead of talking about being jealous of people having more than God, God is jealous in the sense that he wants us all to Himself .

And “God is love” is not saying that the only trait God has is love. It’s saying that God has shown his love to his people by sacrificing his Son, so we should likewise show our love to one another. God is not jealous of what we have, so we should not be jealous of what our fellow believers have.

To put it another way, God wants us to only worship Him. And we are to love one another, which means we shouldn’t be jealous of the things people have. These two statements aren’t contradictory.

Thanks, that makes much more sense than where my mind was going.

Well put summary, Big T. To put it another way:

Jealous definition1 fits Corinthians passage

Jealous definition 2 fits Exodus passage

In modern English we tend to use “jealous” in the form of the first definition 1 much more often than the second.
