I thought Robin Williams did a great job.
I thought is was a well done movie.
I laughed, I cried and it was well worth the $5.
My recommendation: Go see it. Take a date and have a good time.

Judging by the ads, I’d prefer to rip my eyes out than watch this turkey. The Williams/Columbus combination is sappy enough to fill a grove of maple trees even in the best of circumstances, and this doesn’t look like the best.
Plus it’s a trashing of the original.

I would suggest, though I don’t know this for certain, that you do not judge it by the ads. Critical acclaim is better than you’d expect. And it’s not a soppy Robin Williams comedy, they do stick to the original story. Or so I’ve read.

I do not know about the original story, but it was a good movie.
There were comedy bits, but there were also a number of serious bits as well.
I never pay attention to the critics.

It’s been years since I read the book, but I really liked it. I’ll probably see the movie in the hopes that they do a good job.

A review by a local critic I respect began with the sentence: “If there’s anything that makes me believe in the existence of a cruel and vengeful God, it’s the success of writer/director Chris Columbus.” 'Nuff said. The appearance of Robin Williams on a movie screen these days induces unstoppable projectile vomiting in me.
We went and saw “The Green Mile” instead.
“It’s my considered opinion you’re all a bunch of sissies!”–Paul’s Grandfather
The critics I’ve seen have panned it.
And the ads show quite conclusively it’s not like the story. Jumping out a window? Robin has sex? Hell, the main point of the story was that, in ordet to be completely human, the robot had to die, not that he manages to boff the heroine.
I used to like Robin Williams a lot. But it has occurred to me that, for someone so likeable, he’s made a long list of stinker movies – DEAD POETS SOCIETY, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, MRS. DOUBTFIRE, HOOK, TOYS, FATHER’S DAY, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP – especially when he’s the lead. The best Robin Williams movies are those where he has small parts (GOOD WILL HUNTING – though I detest the “psychological breakthrough” cliche), doesn’t show his face (ALADDIN) or is uncredited (DEAD AGAIN), with the one exception of THE FISHER KING.
Chris Columbus started out with the promising ADVENTURES AND BABYSITTING and the excellent ONLY THE LONELY, but the rest of his films are always maudlin and less and less funny as time goes on.

I don’t need a critic panning it for me to decide I’m avoiding this like a pit of vipers.
I remember when I saw the first ad: “They turned one of my favorite Asimov stories into a COMEDY?!?!?!?!??!?!”
The story is relatively dark, full of dark slavery satire and public commentary. The ads for the movie made me queasy.
Thank you, no.
I’ll stay home and read a book.
