MSNBC is showing Biden speaking at a watch party in Atlanta and he is much more on and doesn’t sound weak or addled. I’m wondering what the hell happened? Is it the live crowd and the hand held mic?

They’ve done such a lousy job of bringing VP Harris to the fore - there is just nobody on deck. It’s indefensible, and I’ve been saying it for two years now. With a President this age, the VP should have been much more front and center.
Watching the DNC is like being a Monday-Morning football coach. I’m always wondering, is it Dunning/Krueger? Or would it really be THAT easy to do better than they are managing to do?

Probably two hundred million eligible people in this country and these two geriatrics are the best this country can apparently do. It’s pathetic.

It’s just a first debate. The Democrats are not helping themselves by not talking about Biden’s substance, which was sometimes good but usually better. Unfortunately, what also came across was Biden looking flustered, sounding unsure, and lacking passion. I don’t blame Biden but his preparers. I don’t think this helped Biden at all. But his performance was not bad enough for one debate to be decisive. Neither did great, and so Biden could have done much better. Not one comment from either candidate was truly cutting or even memorable. But Biden looked more passive.
I agree that this was horrible but only because Biden looked a lot less fiery and more slow to compose his answer than he usually is.
I don’t think he sounded particularly hoarse, nor do I think that Trump won any classic debate points by Gish Galloping. He kept throwing out multiple irrelevant points each the question, but it was the same irrelevant points. That’s partly why I stopped watching halfway: not only because of Biden being painful to watch, but because Trump literally sounded like a broken record. He literally could have been replaced with a tape recorder. As one prominent Xitterer would summarize: BORING!
It could be the hand held mic. Biden does prefer them. He will reach for them over a podium mic. It works better for soft voices.
Then we should be focused on how Biden does better from here on out, not on some fantasy where he steps down in favor of some 35-year-old Liberal Avenger who doesn’t exist.

And now that you mention it a panic flailing response can compound the damage way beyond what would be organic to the bad debate performance.
Man, I bet Biden took a sip of water just before he went on and it went down the wrong pipe. I hate when that happens! It legit messes me up for hours!
