Bidet bummer: UTI

So I finally got a “bidet”… Which is really just a sprayer attached to my toilet. I didn’t much care for the idea of a fixed spray I have other issues that made a handheld much more sensible.

No big story attached…I just noticed that it was difficult to clean my bum without inadvertently directing some bum-soiled water towards my girly bits. Having been on this planet for 6-plus decades and in possession of girly bits the whole time, I am very aware and how the wrong kind of mess in those bits can lead directly to a UTI.

Bingo. About two months after getting my bidet, I got the first UTI I’ve had in a couple of decades.

It is very difficult to use my bidet while protecting my bits, but I’m working on it.

If any other girls have any tips or suggestions I’m all ears. (And yeah front approach would seem to be obvious but that’s not so easy for me these days… Bad hip etc. etc.)

Unfortunately, that’s a risk with sprayer attachments. The systems with wands, allowing you to position the stream with precision, seems to lower such a risk tremendously. I listened to a podcast recently where the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood NW USA talked about bidets and their risks and benefits, and she stated that with a directed spray, there was some good research that said it was safe as far as UTIs and bacterial vaginosis was concerned.

So I fear you might need to consider upgrading to the wand version.

Thanks for weighing in, @Qadgop_the_Mercotan. I’ve always thought UTIs seemed a distinct possibility with bidets.

@Stoid, rapid healing to you!

Bummer!!!

Ours has a dial to position the direction of the spray (it’s a higher-end lower-end model if that makes any sense). I’ve gotten to the point where I pretty well know by touch where to position the “aiming” dial before I turn on the “spraying” dial. I’d heard of the concerns over vaginosis so I do my best to NOT go in that direction with the thing.
