You see, I am from Europe, so I do know what they’re for and stuff. And I do know how to use the ones that spray their water straight up. But in France for example I’ve often come across bidets that spray water horizontally, from just below the top of the bidet. How do these work? Are you supposed to hang your bottom in deep enough for the water to reach? I’m a pretty slim guy (skinny would be a better description), but I’ve tried that and couldn’t reach. I’m sure the average American wouldn’t even get wet with a contraption like this. You’re not supposed to use your hand, are you? Please help me with this delicate problem!
The function of the bidet is misunderstood, even in those places where they are common. The bidet was developed to bath those parts, one might say, that need more than weekly cleaning. It’s not specifically to clean your backside after using the toilet, though you can use it that way. As such, some are designed to sit in, others to sit on. For just freshening up, yes, it’s fine to use your hand.

Really, though, a properly designed horizontal bidet (see http://www.friendlyplumber.com/toilets/portrait_bidet.html should spray above the rim, with trajectory adjusted by adjusting the valve (bear in mind you’re sitting on the thing, facing the nozzle and handles).
As Nametag said, you were supposed to bathe in the bidet, either with various medicines poured in the water, if you had some disease, either for women immediatly after an intercourse to wash and limit the risk of pregnancy…
As for fitting in it, I don’t know. Logically, you should be able to. There’s a bidet at my parent’s, so next time I’ll try to see if I fit in it or not.
You mean its not for washing my boots?
Where have your boots been?
>> You’re not supposed to use your hand, are you?
You think you’re playing soccer or something? Do you also pee and make love without using your hands?
Well not at the same time.
That should be someones sig!!

I realize that chlorine could act as a quasi spermicide, but couldn’t the stream of water
actually increase the chance of pregnancy?
They might be able to surf their way to success!
