Well, I spend so much time making/contributing pit threads, I figure I ought to write about something positive for a change
It is great that even though I live in the 11th largest city in the USA, and work in three jobs that don’t initially seem connected to each other, there is a community within my day to day life which I am a part of! Case in point:
A few weeks ago, I was at 7-eleven to grab a cup of coffee and donut before my morning crossing guard shift. While I was there, a gentleman in a jumpsuit recognized me and said hello. He was a trash collector, whose route went right past the corner I work at. More importantly, his daughter was a member of the tutoring center I ALSO work at. What an amazing coincedence! While we were topping off our tanks with caffeinated fuel, he commented that he never sees me at the tutoring center on Mondays. I told him I teach beginner piano lessons on Mondays. He then asked me if it would be possible to teach his daughter, whom I already tutor, how to play the piano. I told him I had an opening, and now, I have her as a student! The trifecta is complete!
So early in the morning, as I’m crossing kids, sometimes his truck will be right there, and we holler banter at each other while I hold out for stragglers to get across the street. It is a really good feeling that doing so many things actually has a pretty neat benefit- when parents find out all the stuff I do, many of them consider me a rather valueable asset. It definitely helps my piano teaching gig, a job which depends on me to be proactively looking for people interested in having their child take piano lessons. What better places to look than my other jobs? When parents ask me “What else do you do?/What are your hobbies?” I always mention the piano teaching job first, because so far, I have three students I acquired through my other jobs.
Its amazing that in a city of 2-odd million(?) people, so many people are connected to everything I do during the day. I often compare myself to the pimple-faced teenager in The Simpsons, who can be found working virtually every mundane, low-level job in Springfield.
