Big-head Victorian Bee Girl

A girl on the bus yesterday was wearing a hoodie with a picture on the left breast. The picture was about the size of a large tarot card. It was painted in a quasi-Victorian style and depicted a young girl wearing a white dress. Her head was oversized by about half. She had straight dark hair framing her pale, heart-shaped face, and wore a neutral expression. In her arms she cradled a bee the size of a cat.

Is this image part of a series? Or was it a one-off someone came up with for the hoodie?

Aside from the dress color, it sounds like Mark Ryden’s portrait of Christina Ricci (or possibly another painting by Ryden). Visible at this link: http://www.heliomag.com/riccis-riches-the-evolution-of-christina-ricci.html

Ryden’s stuff is surrealist pop-art with a Victorian vibe. He’s one of the big names in the “Lowbrow” art movement.

That’s exactly it. And I did think it looked like Christina Ricci. The image was faded, and I should have said the dress wasn’t quite white. Almost did, but in my pre-coffee OP I said, ‘Screw it. I’ll call it white.’

Thanks,

OT, but she says a lot of interesting things in the interview included in that link.
