Big Love 3/8

I was out of town for the week and only caught it last night, doesn’t seem to be a thread started but the search isn’t working right.

Interesting episode- I will really need to re-watch and digest.

The scene between Lois and Wanda peeling potatoes was poignant and funny at the same time.

Can’t believe Roman showed up at the funeral. How stupid was that? Although maybe not showing up would have been like admitting guilt. Loved how Wanda had a lucid moment and was able to thank everyone for coming when Joey couldn’t hold it together.

Joey showed considerable restraint with Adaleen.

Nicki- why stay on the compound? Especially why go to Joey and Wanda’s?

And the Nicki/Alby combination will be dangerous.

Can someone remind me how Joey, Wanda, Niki and the Marquards are related? I know Joey is Bill’s brother, who’s married to Wanda and was married to Kathy and that’s it. Are Wanda and Niki sisters or did they just grow up on the compound together?

I am so happy the shit hit the fan for Niki. I was so ready for the lawyer guy to be shushed away by Niki but he kept spilling it to EVERYONE. That was awesomeness on the highest level.

According to the family tree found at wikipedia (click here), Wanda is not related to Nicky, they just know each other from growing up on the compound.

I feel conflicted about Nicky. She has done a lot of shady stuff, and a lot of stuff that could be harmful to Bill, Barb, and the rest of her family. However, from what we have learned this season, she had a pretty horrible upbringing as well. She was listed in the “Joy Book” along with all of the other compound girls, and she was forced to marry a man at an early age that she didn’t want to marry. I keep hoping that she will realize what a bad man her father is and finally cut ties with him and the rest of her compound family.

What was the deal with the guy who came to Joey and Wanda’s door, who Wanda told to go away? It was implied that he was Wanda’s brother, and also that he had a past with Nicki. Was he the man Nicki was forced to marry at a young age? Have Wanda and Nicki been sisters-in-law twice?

Yes, it was J.J, the man she was married to and her father let her get unsealed from. I was a little let down he didn’t show up to the funeral.

I have a feeling we will see more of him. Clearly, living in Canada turns people into extremely creepy bald dudes.

And speaking of creepy, Selma is now officially back to cross-dressing!

I don’t know, I felt rather sorry for her, in the same way I frequently feel sorry for Sarah. Barb and Marge and Bill act all shocked, shocked, I tell you that she’s not utterly devoted to them at the cost of all others. (Frankly, I don’t see why it would surprise them. It’s not like she picked this family, she married Bill for the same reason she married that other guy, and took that job at the courthouse, and all sort of other shit–her dad forced/coerced her into it.) But they’re all so butthurt about her not being utterly devoted to them, they’re all just turning their backs on her. That’s some kind of familial loyalty, that. Totally gives them the high ground, it does.

Now that none of them will have her but Albie, I guaran-goddamn-tee they’ll get even more butthurt that she’s taking up with him. It totally won’t occur to any of them that at that point she was out of options, other than sleeping on the street that night. Because I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again, none of them are particularly perceptive people or really much give a rat’s ass about how their actions affect anyone else. Which is apparently good and fine if it’s them, but utterly unconscionable in anyone else.

I think it did occur to them, because Bill told her that she was welcome to come home with them. To me it was a open invitation to work it out. The problem is, she doesn’t want to talk about it. I think staying in the compound is more about avoiding having to lay out her reasons for doing what she did. Look how she reacted when they wanted to talk to her about using the birth control. Although they do react strongly, Bill & Barb seem to soften more often than not and are at least interested in hearing what the other has to say. I can’t believe I’m defending them here, because Bill and Barb are my least favorite characters.

The show is so weird like that. It seems like they make every character unlikeable, except for the little kids. You want to like them but they end up doing something crappy. Even Ben and Sara.

I can’t believe how crass Bill was towards Don in this episode. Yeah, he does kind of kick Don around and Don is the sort of guy who takes it. But Don was all “I have to go to an appointment to get my kids back” and Bill was all “fuck that, go fix my problem!” Especially since Bill is supposedly all about family. I guess he’s only all about HIS family (when they’re obeying him).

I also loved the fact that it was okay for Bill to interfere with the trial and tamper with witnesses, but not Nicki. I got the feeling that if Nicki had been working for Bill in that courthouse instead of Adaleen/Roman, it would have been just peachy by him.

The issue there is that because of her amateurish secret agent behavior, Nicki has caused the outing of the family with, of all people, the DA’s office. That’s bad enough to cause him and the others to be angry, but the fact that she was flirting with - and was nearly intimate with - another man is cause for ejection from the family.

The outing of the polygamists will lead to serious consequences from the Mormon church (and possibly the state), and from the previews it looks like Barb is going to be excommunicated. As a family that is clearly operating in opposition to the church and state, Bill’s casino dreams are probably tanked, as any backroom deals are going to be off. Nobody with aspirations to higher church status (like Ted) is going to have anything to do with Bill.

Why do they care what the Mormon church thinks of them? They’ve already separated themselves from the church by engaging in a polygamous lifestyle and following what they believe is the true church. They’ve already given the church a big F-U and shouldn’t be surprised to get one back.

Also, I thought that Bill admitting to the DA that he is married to Nicolette Grant was probably a huge hint that he was engaging in polygamy. And what Bill and his family are doing isn’t really illegal. He’s only legally married to Barb. They are all consenting adults. It’s no different than anyone else having children out of wedlock. What is there to prosecute?

Because Bill’s a big business owner in a Mormon-dominated area, for one. If the Mormons turn against him, he’s sunk. And Barb cares because she was raised in that church and it is obviously still important to her. Look at how strongly she’s reacted to the news that there may be proof that the Mormon church as a whole never meant to ban polygamy - she wants to live her live as a sisterwife and be good with the church at the same time.

Polygamy is against Utah state law. If they are outcast by the church, then they can’t rely on any support whatsoever from that body. That’s pretty much an economic death sentence, as Bill’s store will not be patronized by right-thinking Mormons and he and his family might as well move back to Juniper Creek and live in a shack.

Because they still live in a heavily Mormon area and Bill is a business owner. No one will work with him if he’s seen openly as a sinner, which will cause his businesses to crumble.

I still don’t see how Bill could actually be prosecuted for anything in this day and age. He’s no more guilty of anything than a guy who has two mistresses with three kids apiece, or a woman who has five kids by five different fathers. I think a case against him would fall apart in a court of law very quickly. When is the last time anyone was prosecuted successfully for polygamy? Anyway, I can’t exactly say I feel sorry for Bill. He chooses to live this life and do so off the compound where it is not accepted. To expect people not to find out eventually is ridiculous. He wants to go against the church in order to live this lifestyle, but wants the church to support him in something they stopped approving of over 100 years ago? Bill always seems to want to have it both ways without ever paying the consequences for his actions.

Why the hell does Bill insist on living in a suburban neighborhood with rows of houses, instead of just buying a big lot on a few acres of his own property? (Obviously if he had done that, there would be no show, but still.)

And therein lies the series plot.

This series is not about Bill. It’s about the women, and about the misogyny and exclusion that defines the Mormon Church to this day.

And who actually own’s Nikki and Margene’s houses? Are they all in Bill’s name or what? Nikki was freaking out about Bill taking a mortgage out on her house. I highly doubt Bill could afford to buy three houses in cash so he must already be paying 3 mortgages already. If they’re all in his name I suppose he could convince the bank they’re rentals, but if Nikki or Marge is on the deed it’s going raise eyebrows.

So now the Mormons are mad at HBO because they’ll be showing an Endowment ceremony. Mormon and ex-Mormon Dopers, what is this ceremony about? And why will it embarrass the church?
