Obscure, but lots of people participated in the Power Pop and Music Snob threads a couple a week or so ago who seem to know a bunch about one of my newly favorite bands, Big Star.
So there is a photo on their cover of their 2-albums-on-one-CD collection #1 Record/Radio City:
It is pretty much the most used photo of the band. But who is who? At first, simply because of the way the credits are listed on the CD foldout, I assumed that, left to right, it is:
Alex Chilton (with little mustache, more or less in profile to the camera)
Andy Hummel (in the back)
Chris Bell
Jody Stephens (looking very British, IMHO)
I know Hummel and Stephens are correct, but what about Chilton and Bell? I ask because I just got I am the Cosmos, the lost Chris Bell CD, not done when he died, but released in '92 (and well worth a listen if you are a Big Star fan). But the photos in the Cosmos foldout look nothing like the third-from-the-left fellow in that Big Star photo. To me, they look more like Mr. Mustache…
I looked up recent Chilton photos and they don’t really look like either Mr. Mustache or Mr. Third-from-left, but if pushed, I would go for Mr. Mustache. So now I have TWO Mr. Mustaches. It is all very confusing.
Can you clarify for me? Who is who in that classic BStar photo?!? Thank you!
: Chris Bell is the mysterious mustached man. Then Jody Stephens is the one in the back, Andy Hummell next, and Alex Chilton on the far right. Jody was supposed to be the handsome one.
