People within earshot of Illinois State gov’t over the past 8 years have known Blago was dirty, they just thought he was untouchable. He learned at the feet of his father-in-law Dick Mell and aside from La Familia Stephens of Rosemont and the Strogers it doesn’t get much more crooked than slick Dick. The difference being that Rod got caught and Dick was happy stomping around the relatively small pool of Chicago Machine politics, that, thanks to the gov’s office, gets overlooked or ignored by the Feds.
You may be right about Specter, I can’t recall, either way though, side switchers are assholes, especially if they do so AFTER an election.
Specter may be unique in that even (non-politician) members of the party he switched to hate him for doing it.
I most certainly would. And even if Blagojevich could somehow have convinced to accept the job, I would have enough class not to play the race card when everyone started questioning the legitimacy of the appointment.

Absolutely, especially in this situation. It was well-known that Blago was trying to sell the seat before Burris accepted the appointment. Personally, I would have run like the devil away from ANY association with the Slick Serb at that point, lest I find myself going down in history splashed with his slime. Burris was a pretty unremarkable, but venerable, Illinois politician before this, but he basically took a sledgehammer to his reputation the second he took the Senate seat, whether that reputation destruction is fair or not.
It just seems like too many people in both parties have forgotten the whole point of avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. Caesar’s wife, they’re not.

Barbara Boxer is my neighbor - lives 2 doors down from me in my building - and she’s never an asshole to me, personally. Quite pleasant and easy to talk to, in fact. Her husband, I have to say, seems a bit sheepish and “stay on the sidelines” even in normal life, but he’s pleasant as well.

Yup, “gun grabbing” is certainly the most important issue facing the country right now. Some people mistakenly think it is the ecnomy, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, or the threat of nuclear missles from North Korea. But without every nut in America having access to a gun how can we face down North Korea?
You can shoot down a nuclear missile with a rifle and a good scope.
I know this is OT, but are we all really concerned with North Korea?
Pakistan and India HATE each other, and they are both nuclear powers. It’s amazing how since WWII, no one has dropped one on even their biggest enemy. (and those two bombs were firecrackers compared to what we have now).
To drop a bomb would mean instant retaliation/annihilation. I don’t think anyone wants a ticket to that party.
North Korea is just a small, poor country that wants the world to look at them. A sad vestige of the WWII cold war, lucky enough to have the 38th parallel to neatly divide the country. Angry that their relatives to the south have a relatively good standard of living.
So, we’re looking. Now what?

You’re exactly right. Hey, you shouldn’t be worried about health care, tobacco regulation or gay rights, either. Those are ancillary to the issues you mentioned. Therefore, I expect that you will temper your interests with regard to those topics and focus solely on what’s really important.

Nope, the most important issue right now is Boxer getting her panties in a bunch over a general calling her ma’am instead of Senator. Especially since she should damn well know that anybody who is in the military will address anyone as sir or ma’am if there is any doubt who is higher in the chain of command and I’m pretty sure the General knows the chain of command. She was grandstanding and petty and yes, being a bitch.
Maybe not the biggest asshole in congress but for this week she surely is in the running.
Please stay focused on the so very important issue of your fucking title Senator, maybe it will keep your petty ass out of less important issues like health care.
