Biggest music act “retirement ripoff” ever?

The silliest one was when James Murphy announced that LCD Soundsystem would play its final shows and then he would retire. He was around 40 years old and there was no chance he was going to stay away from recording and performing for the rest of his life. He lasted about five years, and he was never really out of the music business. He was just temporarily out of the LCD Soundsystem business. I did go to the “final” show at Madison Square Garden, but I knew that he would be back.

Largely true, but I’ll admit to being pretty surprised when he announced LCD Soundsystem was returning, especially so soon. He seemed to really like the idea of LCD going out “on top” and having a new chapter. If nothing else, I thought he would try to milk that legend more.
