Bill Clinton: Still a lying sack of shit; still getting a pass from journalists.

You misunderstand me. I was under the impression that he was joking and that everyone knew it, not that he was lying and everyone knew it. Your opinion of his moral character aside, I’m sure you’ll admit that he’s a smart guy.

Well, not everybody. There were a few people around here who were shocked to find out during the primaries how dishonest and sleazy were the Clintons’ tactics. If the media had publicized his propensity for lying like they should have, everyone would have known about it.

Or Hillary either. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, he’s a smart guy who does incredibly stupid things, most likely out of arrogance and a history of being allowed to get away with it.

Other than some questionable pieces of ass, what incredibly stupid things has he done?

I only tried that marijahoonie once, but I didn’t exhale.

Supporting Blanche Lincoln.

Do you think his nickname was Slick Willie because people thought he was an honest, upstanding, unsleazy guy? Come on. He shaded the truth all the time and lied other times and people knew it. There was the pot thing, the Gennifer Flowers thing, the Paula Jones thing, the Monica Lewinsky thing, his alleged draft dodging… people knew what they were getting in terms of his personal ethics. For the most part - this is what you’re having trouble with, I think - they didn’t care. People don’t expect much honesty from politicians. Clinton was their guy, so they defended him. And to make matters worse, his opponents falsely accused of doing some crazy shit that was much worse than anything he had really done, which made Clinton’s lies seem pretty minor.

Some people here were disillusioned in 2008, that was true. I thought that was darnkly funny. Here’s why I think it happened: unlike during his term, they could go online see video clips of him saying one thing Wednesday and another Thursday. They’d had seven years to forget what he was like in public and gloss over his faults. And many people weren’t in his corner this time because of Obama. It’s not because they never knew he was dishonest in the first place.

True.

I agree completely with the OP and I suggest we impeach Bill Clinton.

Truth be told, I’m not all that cranked. We’re just havin’ a little fun here. I hardly give Clinton a thought unless he turns up on my television, where he can occasionally be seen doing something good but more often than not lying.

Well, one of them can be found in the OP. Another can be found in the statement that he didn’t inhale ( which was later…much later…apparently amended to have been because of athsma that we’d never known he had and which I’ve only heard of here. He certainly didn’t bring it up last night when he was claiming that he was only joking.) His clumsy at subliminally playing the race card against Obama. His lies about Hillary’s lies. Etc., etc. (And there are others I could name which have more serious consequences cough bin Laden cough but I don’t want to have to fight those battles for the thousandth time here so I won’t go into them now.)

Oh, ze irony, zhe burnz!!!

Here’s Clinton on the subject in 2008:

Is this different than what he said in the Baby Boomers thing? What’s the issue here? I’m just not getting what the lie is, and without a transcript, it’s kind of hard to tell.

If it’s at all like the quote above, he’s clearly saying that he tried and he couldn’t. What am I supposed to be upset about?

I can understand being upset about the cheating thing, because most people consider cheating on your wife immoral and lying to cover it up shows a lack of character. If he didn’t want it used against him he should have kept it in his pants, etc. Personally I don’t really care about poiotician’s moral character as long as they do their jobs well, but I can understand that.

But smoking some dope? Come on, who the fuck hasn’t? Yes, he has to lie about it. All politicians have to lie about that, it’s just how it is. It’s practically a formality.

Why would we impeach Clinton when it’s so obviously Obama’s fault? Blame Obama.

Well, since neither of the things in the OP appear to have happened the way you say they did, his “history” is looking a little thin.

Ah, is that what’s going on? Clinton’s saying, “I didn’t inhale, but not for lack of effort, therefore I’m the butt of a joke.”

Starving Artist is hearing “I was joking when I said I didn’t inhale.”

Well said. The real uproar among the right wing was that we all knew he was lying about drugs - but that not enough of the voters really cared. It was the beginning of a shift in the nation’s attitude regarding drugs. I was a right-wing rabble rouser at the time, and really did not care about it - but the older generation that I was in contact with was in an uproar.

I wish Brokaw would have said something like, “So you had to lie about it, just to move on then?” It would be an interesting interview to talk about why the “I didn’t inhale” defense had to be used at that time by a Boomer, and why we can now elect a President who openly admitted to used in drugs in his youth and nobody really cares enough to influence their vote.

The only thing that bothers me is that lying about it was a wuss move, and the President of the Unites States should not be a wuss.

I haven’t.

Yeah, I know. That’s why NOW was so quiet despite his history of skirt-chasing and doing all he could to ruin the lives of the women who came forward with his behavior only to be dismissed as “bimbo eruptions”. Any old scuzzbug is okay as long as he’s on our side, eh?

Remember, we’re talking about the 20th century. Concern about whether you will be able to achieve a lifelong dream (being President, let’s say) can really make one circumspect when dealing with an sensationalist media already inclined to the point of the view of the PTB.

But I do agree that now that he’s had two terms, Bill needed to go ahead and say “I smoked it, I enjoyed it, what’s the problem.”
