It’s hard to believe strong enough evidence would exist after 51 years to win a trial for this.

Testimony is evidence. If it’s compelling enough, a jury can believe it. And in a civil trial the standard is “preponderance of the evidence” (I.e. what is the greater weight of the evidence? Is it more likely than not?)
