But he is not religious. His superficiality ignores the commandments of the one he claims to follow. I am sure he does it out of sincere belief that praying in public is doing god’s will, but he demonstrates a lack of understanding of key parts of the teachings of Jesus. He has been misled.
Has he ever asked you to trust him? Do you think you’ll ever run into him in your life?
I’m agnostic…but I just don’t understand the outright hatred for this guy…or for anyone who is religious. Isn’t Maher flaunting his atheism just as much as Tebow is flaunting his faith? Who’s to say who is right? God either exits or he doesn’t. You don’t know for sure and neither do I.
Religiousity is the last refuge of a seriously disturbed man.
Where are you seeing hatred? Pointing out hypocrisy is not hatred.
You haven’t watched much of Bill Maher’s show if you don’t think he makes gay jokes all the time.
Fear: It’s not hypocrisy because he doesn’t live up to your interpretation of what Christianity should be.
Hell, I’m an athiest and … I don’t hate Tebow. In fact, I agree with **spooje’s **assessment (“by ALL available evidence, he is a hard-working, good-hearted kid”). But really … this thread isn’t about Tebow; it’s about Maher. Tebow just had the misfortune of winning 6 games in a row, being on the cover of every magazine and website and having every Christian football fan going on about how God is on his side and all that goofiness.
Maher addressed that phenomenon – again, with the most obvious joke possible. If anything, he should be pitted for posting a hacky joke.
Not even Jim Carrey? Class-clowns get rich and famous by calling attention to themselves in hilarious ways.
Bill Maher =/= Jim Carrey
I don’t hate the guy. I do enjoy making fun of him because he really cries out for it to some extent. I don’t think Maher hates him either, although I’m sure he thinks he’s an idiot. A lot of people have made jokes about Tebow. Relatively few are doing it out of real hatred.
Possibly.
It’s not only about who is right and who isn’t. It’s about how people behave.
I believe you have several…
OK, then, he’s a hypocrite. Now what’s so important about this particular hypocrite that’s worthy of all this attention? Is Tebow the only hypocrite in the NFL? In the world? What is it about this guy’s faith that is driving so many people nuts? What need is being filled by pointing out Tebow’s hypocrisy?
Just to be clear, I had no problem at all with Maher’s tweet.
Much less than you… or any people who base their lives on myths and a book of allegory.
Bill Maher is spot on. The kind of unavoidable religious posturing that Tebow does is annoying and I’m glad Jesus himself decided it was a bit fucked up too
At least he’s trying. How easy for to you to hold people to standards you don’t hold for yourself. It’s too easy to criticize someone else for failing at something you don’t even try to do yourself.
Is this in the talking points now? This is a misunderstanding of what is in Matthew, if that’s what you’re referencing, though certainly it is an admonishment against praying to promote one’s “holiness” (or for any reason other than for communion with God). But don’t feel bad, you’re not the first to make such an error. If you want to use scripture as your reference on this matter, you might want to consider the fact that Jesus himself prayed in public.
Again, just your own prejudice.
As I said upstream, I do NOT share Tebow’s beliefs. And I do not share your hatred of those beliefs.
Mainly, it’s his popularity. If you are that much of a public figure, people are free to take shots at you.
It’s not his faith. If it was, Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, and Troy Polamalu would get as much ridicule as deeply religious NFL figures (note that they don’t get any flak over it, nor are they as well known to the general public).
But none of those individuals have Tebow’s popularity with the general public.
Tebow has had this sort of popularity dating back to his college days.
It’s not surprising that he’s the butt of jokes now that he’s got a wider national audience.
FWIW, the same sort of thing happened, in miniature, in the city of Houston with Vince Young. For a long time (and even now, actually), a lot of VY fans decried Houston’s decision to draft Mario Williams instead of hometown hero Vince Young. Of course, none of the off the field behavior or just outright mediocre on-field numbers actually mattered to them, as he was their hero and could do no wrong.
That opened Young up to a lot of mockery within the city, which drove his fans crazy. They’ve shut up a lot now that it’s been several years, and he’s had absolutely no impact relieving Michael Vick in Philadelphia. But there still are a few loons who get in a huff when you suggest maybe Houston made the right call.
So, no, it’s not the religion thing. It’s the hero thing and people trying to knock a bit of the halo off. People don’t like seeing their hero’s name being tainted, even in jest. The religion angle just happens to be the easiest way to publicly knock Tebow down a peg but also the one Tebow fans are most sensitive about (which is another good reason to use it in jokes).
I got no hatred of his beliefs. we probably share many. I’m just not such a cock sure jock, with an unrealistic view of the world molded around religio, and the unfortunate ordeal and wake-up call that is Home schooling.
Yeah, the poor guy wound up a star quarterback in the NFL. Poor bastard…
He’s not poor, he’s priveliged. and most impourtunely famous… and the organizer’s and founders of his religion are using him… not unlike the star center of Scientology.
