Nice to see Olivia Williams and Murray teamed up for (I think) the first time since Rushmore. Too bad they couldn’t have landed Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter to play Their Majesties again, though!
Nit pick: as Queen Elizabeth. At that time, the Queen Mother was Queen Mary (though I don’t think she was called “Queen Mother” – just “Queen Mary”, since there’s weren’t two Queen Elizabeths to be distingished).
BTW, you can watch all of the PBS series Bertie & Elizabeth on YouTube. Queen Mary is an interesting character, very stiff upper lip, Queen first, mother second.
I’m looking forward to this. I hadn’t heard of the visit before I saw the trailer and it seems an interesting slice of American and British history.
Thanks for that link. I read all the other links too, such as FDR’s invitation to the King and the King’s response. It’s too bad the kids didn’t come too.
All the actors are top notch, Murray, Linney, Coleman, Williams. The actor playing the King, Samuel West, is new to me. The director’s name, Roger Michell, wasn’t familiar to me but after looking him up I see that he directed these movies I’ve seen and liked: Notting Hill (with of course, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant), Changing Lanes (with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck), and Venus (with Peter O’Toole, nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and Jodie Whittaker). His most recent movie was Morning Glory, with Diane Keaton, Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams, which I skipped because it looked awful, but I might have seen it had I known about those other movies the guy directed.
I’ll have to start ignoring the trailer by closing my eyes and plugging my ears. I’ve seen it several times already and the movie won’t be released until December! I don’t want to get sick of it, or get used to line readings or scenes that don’t end up in the finished film. That always jars me out of a film.
