My entire first post was mocking rat avatar, whether someone gets that or not. And I wasn’t trying to whoosh anyone either. I thought what I wrote was pretty outlandish - that the difference between “who” and “whom” was casual vs. formal. You know, making fun of what he seemed to be doing?

Anyhow, when a couple of people took me seriously, I said even more ridiculous things trying to drive the point home that I was joking. Absolutely stupid stuff, thinking no one could possibly take me seriously. . . .

I’ll cop to it. But then, I don’t consider trolling (by the loose definition of the word we tend to use) automatically to be a bad thing.

But if we pursue this line of reasoning, whether or not a joke is trolling must depend on whether or not I get it?
So let’s say I say two different things with a straight face (in the BBQ Pit):

“A Moose once bit my sister. No, really!” --> Obviously a joke, if one knows one’s Monty Python. Not as obvious otherwise. Trolling?

“‘Your’ is what they call an accusative participle.” --> Not as obvious a joke in any case, certainly. Trolling?

I didn’t realize he was joking at first, either. And I think his mockery of rat avatar was way too attenuated to be obvious. But he clearly thought everyone would realize it. Poor jokery does not equal trolling.

It took me a bit to cotton on as well. Which is most of why I enjoyed it.
