I know, I know, not everybody is as big a Billy Joel a fan as I am, but still I feel like I have to let people know that if you go to www.people.com and click on the top right column you can stream the new Billy Joel single “All My Life”.
This new song is not your typical Billy Joel song and is quite simialar to the old love songs of the past, think Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as well. It is quite cool to see one of America’s most brilliant songwriters ever write another song, and it is definetly refreshing to hear a good quality love song, something which have seem to lost amid this new rape craze in the U.S.
So go ahead, listen to the song, maybe even send it to that special someone and enjoy, cause the Piano Man is back.
Also, I forgot to mention, the song will be available for download the 20th of this month on itunes.
Damn. I guess I need to start paying more attention, cuz there’s one trend I totally missed.
Hey! What rape isn’t accompanied by a quality love song?
14 years … one single … whew! Time for another break!
Hahahah, yeah, I noticed that typo a bit too late, my bad.
That is the thing about music. You get your whole life to do the first album, and they want your second one in two years.
It’s a very typical Joel song, in the best sense. Joel was always uncomfortable with contemporary musical trends (and insecure enough to try and follow them), and he never really liked the sound of his own voice. As it’s been said before, the man was born a few decades too late. He should have been a songwriter in the Gershwin/Porten mold, writing hits for all the greats, not trying to sing them himself. Unfortunately, he found himself coming of age in a period where every songwriter had to be a singer.
In the perfect alternate reality, I own the Ella Fitzgerald Billy Joel Songbook CD.
I agree with what you say, except that I believe that good songwriters are often ignored beause they are not singers as well.
In a sense it really helps a person appreciate a songwriter who can sing as well. Granted, Joel’s voice is “weird” compared to other singers, but once you adapt to it, his voice becomes unique as well.
I find it kind of sad to think that Joel may not release another CD. Although music is subjective, I can’t help but argue that Joel’s music is good. Most of his songs, especially his many hit songs, have great lyrics, great rhythms an are good in an overall sense.
I know it’s an often repeated thing, especially by those who appreciate the music of old, but the music nowadays, especially the more popular contemporary stuff, is just plain crappy.
