IIRC, Carter micro-managed the Iran hostage operation, overruling some aspects requested by the military and insisting on others against military advice - mainly for political reasons - which helped contribute to the delta force disaster.

I found that a very interesting piece, reflecting my own thoughts on how I myself should be reacting and I appreciated his honesty as he admits that he isn’t quite sure about what he just posted.
I myself am not inclined to celebrate. I’m against the death penalty and actually see all criminals as victims and worthy of sympathy. But I always get uncomfortable when someone suggests how others should or shouldn’t react. If someone wants to dance in the streets because bin Laden has been killed, I’m not going to suggest that they have misbehaved.
Truly this is a great day for often-maligned U.S. intelligence.

He’s actually saying that if you want to see any of the ground work laid by Republicans come to fruition you should vote Democratic for President and reap, reap, reap.
The reality is that Republicans raid the treasury as much as possible of all money and credit when they control the executive branch and reduce the tax burden of the wealthy and corporations. Then, when their policies result in massive long term deficit spending they fight restoring the taxes because they want the poor and middle class taxed for their benefit. It turns the naive and idealistic ideas of clueless socialists into something repugnant and evil so that they can embrace it.

You have to admit that GWB inherited a CIA and military intelligence capability that had been decimated and shrunk to near impotence by the Clinton administration. Despite his having been out of office for a couple of years now, most of the intelligence and military capabilty that eventually resulted in bin-Laden’s being found was developed during Bush’s time in office.

It’s far from a dumb question. The US is at war with Al Qaeda (Congress passed an Authorization for Military Force stating the military could be used against Al Qaeda) and OBL is a member of Al Qaeda. Therefore, in a war you can kill your enemy as a measure of first resort. You don’t need to try and capture the enemy first.

Osama was a nasty piece of work, but this is tribalism at its ugliest. If Obama or Bush were killed these same people would be devastated, even though they’ve killed far more innocents than ObL.
