One bit of discomfort. The Prez was emphatic about the operation being carried out by military personnel, special forces. Which is understandable, given the unpopularity of Robowar amongst the hearts and minds. But they attacked a cluster of violent and well-armed terrorists, direct combat with small arms, and had no casualties? Remarkable.

No, I agree with you. I mean, good riddance and all, but I’m not about to go shoot fireworks.

Seeing photos of a big, cheering, U.S. mob just seems wrong. I hate when I see other countries do it, and I sure don’t want us to do it.

They cheered when the towers fell. They danced in the streets and passed candy out to the children. Osama was given a chance to surrender, with the understanding that they were taking him dead or alive either way. The people who were killed on 9/11 never had a chance, never had a warning. I’m too much of an introvert to make a spectacle out of myself in the middle of the street, but I have no problem with the people cheering in front of the White House and at Ground Zero. I’m with them in spirit.

As Kyle and Stan said in “South Park,” if you can’t root for the home team, you may as well get the hell out of the stadium.

No disrespect meant to anyone here of the Islamic faith. I know we made a point of burying bin Laden in accordance with Muslim law and I can respect that. He deserved no honors, but he doesn’t deserve having his body desecrated, either. I believe in showing the world we can even treat our enemies without gratuitous disrespect. But I can’t help but thinking we flushed him like a common goldfish. He didn’t deserve any better than that. And his death doesn’t deserve quiet contemplation on our part, either. We gave our reverence and our silence to the victims in the days after 9/11. They were more deserving of it.

I saw this discussed on another site, as well. The consensus seemed to be:

1. This was a completely All-Stars Special Forces operation.
2. The compound was not on any special alert.
3. The attack happened during the night.
4. It was a very quick smash, grab and run operation, with helicopters standing by.
5. Bin Laden probably had no reason to believe his cover had been made.

And- his house was blown up on the way out the door and he was buried at sea (in the Islamic tradition?) to prevent any shrines being build to him. Nice detail work!

I agree that I don’t think we should celebrate anyone’s death, and I’ll throw Hitler, Mao, Stalin etc etc into this mix. I mean, we can celebrate them changing their minds, or getting captured. We can even celebrate the direct consequence that their death means that they won’t be harming anyone anymore. But to me celebrating their death just fuels too much of a cycle. I’m glad that he can’t harm anyone anymore, and I’m somewhat abstractly glad that he got a form of comeuppance and didn’t just walk away free, but I can’t in good faith celebrate that any human is dead.

Now, that’s not to say we shouldn’t have killed him, I’m not shedding any tears over that. I have no objection to taking military action against someone when it’s necessary or would result in a greater good. Him dying, and us killing him is totally, perfectly fine on every level. It’s just I don’t think the reaction and celebration is proper.

I don’t believe that all the celebrants were there for the sake of second-hand blood lust and macho posturing. Some significant portion of the crowd gathered to express the joy that only justice can releases.
