I thought I would revisit this series as I had only seen a few shows while the show was broadcast.
Umpteen hours later, I have to give KUDOS to the writers and how the cast played their roles with relish.
There were many lines, scenes, that made me laugh out loud, snort Diet Coke up my nose, pause the stream to get microwave popcorn and return, and laugh again.
I would love to be in that writers room. It must have been fun.
Thoughts?
BTW…I am suddenly enamored with Kristen. Good job.
My wife and I binged this last month. It was top notch until the last season. We actually skipped about six episodes in the last season just to get to the two part finale.
Harry was annoying as shit throughout. The only weak link of the show, imo.
John Lithgow and Jane Curtain had amazing chemistry.
ETA: One of the funniest scenes had to be when Dick gave Mary the dog and the thing humped her leg the whole way upstairs. Makes me laugh just thinking of it!
William Shatner’s appearances cracked me up, including that “creature on the wing!” reference he made with Lithgow.
I remember one error, though: Wayne Knight in one of his later appearances said Sally was Tommy’s sister when as far as he knew, Sally was Tommy’s aunt.
I think I remember that, but even though there were defined roles (Dick, Harry and Sally were siblings and Tommy was Dick’s son), they always seemed to play fast and loose with them. They even made a couple jokes about the ambiguity.
One of my favorite shows. It’s just unabashedly silly and ridiculous and surreal and it doesn’t apologize for anything. I’m glad it’s back on Netflix. It seems to show up on Netflix and then disappear again regularly. I blame The Big Giant Head.
I remember John Lithgow going on a rant against rock and roll, just like the preacher that he played in Footloose. Also, look up the episode titles. Most of them were a clever play on the name Dick, such as “Will Work For Dick,” “I Enjoy Being a Dick,” and “I-am-Dick Pentameter.”
Yes, they (the writers and I assume the cast) had a lot of fun with stuff like that.
There was the time John Cleese was on The Muppet Show and during a pirate sketch a parrot sitting on his shoulder was giving him a hard time until Cleese asked it if he wanted to be an ex-parrot.
One of the funniest shows ever, with amazing performances by all of the actors. I had bought all the seasons on DVD long before it ever showed up on Netflix.
“It’s opposite Wednesday” Nina throwing that back at Dick has to be one of the greatest lines in Sitcom history. “Probably not” from John Cleese would be my second favorite for the series.
I read that the producers decided to cast Shatner after seeing him do comedy on Saturday Night Live, just to use that line. Lithgow’s “The same thing happened to MEEEEEEEEEEEEE” was a great moment.
Shatner also credits that role with getting him on Boston Legal.
