Biology Careers

This May I graduate from College with a B.S. in biology. Yay me I have a great gpa and can’t wait to move on and have a home not shared with a heard of girls. So i’ve been told you should start applying for jobs the semester before you graduate so being the go getter I am I go to career services and thats where it all comes apart. They are about as helpful as…well they aren’t they just depress me. I go talk to my advisor and she tryes to help and tells me career services is of no use :smack: to bio majors like me.

Then I email my supervisor from my internship this summer, bad news the city has instituted a hiring freeze. So after more searching and emailing and such I find there are no jobs available for me in this great state of MN. How on earth do people find biology careers without moving to Yellowstone?

start applying at colleges for lab jobs is my advice. It took 6 months for me to get a job.

night, check out this page. It lists positions ranging from temporary technicians to tenured faculty. It will give you a good idea what people are looking for, experiencewise. (Are you still interested in wildlife management?)

If you have experience working on a research project, then great! If not, see if someone at your school needs someone for a quick project (if your schedule allows it). For example, we’re hiring right now for someone to do some blocking ELISA assays for 2 months, and we’ll train them. And even if you can’t get paid, getting the experience is worthwhile. I have taught a few students how to handle and take blood samples from wild birds, and that kind of knowledge is golden in ornithological circles. If you’re wanting to do field work, you may be taking a few temporary position before landing a permanent one just to build up that kind of experience.

Good luck!
