I’ll fix that tonight…sorry. He’s such a sweetie pie; always so happy to see me in the morning and when I arrive home. I bore my family and friends with videos of him singing and chewing his toys and stealing my breakfast and dashing across the table with it…
He’s fully flighted, so he has the run of the apartment, but he chooses my shoulder as much as physically possible…he’ll even fly from the living room into the bedroom closet to perch while I decide what to wear!
I was raised with birds - tiels, budgies, finches, cockatoos, conures, quails, and the occasional larger parrot we’d pet-sit. My dream is to have my own ‘flock’ with various larger parrots, but for the moment, Nikita is all I have time for. I have another tiel, Kellogg, but she’s pretty unfriendly, no matter how much time I spend with her; she just likes to hang out on her cagetop and chirp.
Those are some really good pics of him, too!
This little guy on my shoulder (this is an ooooold pic from years ago!) was our sun conure, Oscar. Who we found out (years later) was a she. Oscar is no longer around, but he(she) was a very cool bird. We also had a Quaker named Pogo, and a few cockatiels (two that my mom named Mac and Tosh – yuk yuk yuk).
A miscellaneous bird story:
– My folks went to Florida State – so big FSU Seminole fans. My mom bird-sat a friend’s sun conure (bird’s name was Cody) for a while. The friend was a UF Gator fan. While birdsitting, my mom taught her bird the first phrase of the Seminole war cry – the tune that fans sing at the football games. When the friend had her bird back and first heard Cody make this sound, she thought it was her husband, messing with her. Hilarity ensued. (This friend had just had a baby – mom said she was going to teach it to the new kid, next!)
Little Bacall the widowed zebra finch seems to be bearing up well in mourning. Actually, I’ve never seen her more bouncy. Maybe their relationship wasn’t the model of marital bliss I thought it was. Bogie did peck her on the head a lot.
My daughter’s guinea pig chirps constantly, so it’s almost like there’s another bird in the house. A short stubby hairy bird that licks my chin whenever I pick her up…
Well, my bird keeps me, sortof.
This is ‘our’ Hispaniola Lizard Cuckoo, known in our country as ‘dumb bird’. And there’s a good reason for that.

This one is a frequent guest.
My bird can kick all of your birds’ asses.
Ok, so he’s not really my bird but that* is * me holding him…
This makes me miss our birdies. We started with a parakeet who went to the great big aviary in the sky overnight back in February of '01. Very shortly thereafter, my coworker’s ex-brother-in-law keeled over dead at his desk, leaving behind a schnauzer, a cockatiel, and a whole lotta debt. Nobody wanted the tiel, so we took her. A couple of years later, we got another parakeet (my husband wanted one.) They lived on top of their respective armoires in our bedroom until last summer. When we found out I was pregnant, we were worried that the birdies wouldn’t get the care and attention they deserved. So, Hubby found a coworker of his who loves birds and has had them for years. Our girls went to live with her two male tiels and cageful of finches. They are still there.
Currently, we are bird-sitting my mom’s parakeet, and we are enjoying his singing and toy-banging. It makes us miss having one of our own.
Mighty Girl-- your cuckoo rocks.
Such brilliant bridies! I feel like we’re missing people, though.
Up until I got sick last year I had an Eclectus The one on the lower left and the lower right look like she did. But alas, it was clear that I was going to be away for a few months and none of my friends had the time or experience to care for her and she went to live with someone else.
I have thought about getting a grey, but my current job keeps me away from the house about 10 hours a day and I figure it wouldn’t be fare tot he bird to be away so much.
Thanks! I’ve been focusing more on getting videos, so I don’t have many new pics. Those are a few months old.
Here’s more!

**Surly Chick ** - that bird is magnificent! I’m so jealous. I’ve never the opportunity to be that close to one.
It was absolutely stunning - and much lighter than I thought it would be. But it kept eyeing my earrings which made me a tad nervous…
