Bishop vs trump

Wow. I hope the half that says preaching tolerance and mercy is wrong is a half you don’t want in your life. Sounds like awful people. I’m learning a lot about “christians” with this event. Terrible people.

Yeah I am so glad I left religion years ago. I have no words.

I’ve been teaching my daughter, age 8, chess. I also learned the card game “bridge” when I was around her age.

This thread title brings up a slightly confusing but apt quandary.

You mean when giving a sermon you shouldn’t preach at your audience?

What the fuck are you on about?

And which people would those be?

Literally. https://www.themarysue.com/empathy-is-considered-a-sin-magas-viciously-attack-the-church-after-trump-is-asked-to-show-compassion/

In a post on X, Utah-based Deacon Ben Garrett warned fellow Christians not to “commit the sin of empathy” by listening to a “snake” like Budde, drawing a parallel between the bishop and Biblical depictions of Satan. “She hates God and His people,” he wrote. “You need to properly hate in response.”

If he can’t take a mild admonishment from her, how’s he supposed to deal with our former allies? And quit citing the Bible. The guy who wrote it threw in a bunch of his own personal gripes, and his editor just wasn’t diligent enough.

Quit citing the Bible in a thread about a bishop who preached from the Bible?

What was that loud whooshing sound just there?

I meant they should quit citing it.

I think what really gets me is the rank hypocrisy of the Trumpers complaining the bishop brought politics into religion. These are people who cloaked themselves in religious language, arguing the United States is a Christian nation, and treating Trump as if he was some sort of Tawny Messiah.

I am not in the least religious, but I would be even MORE suspicious that I am of any church that didn’t offer at least SOME lip service supporting charity towards the least fortunate and similar messages. Which is basically all the bishop said. Be compassionate to the weak and afraid.

As kenobi suggests, the message could have been phrased quite a bit more directly. If Chump intends to be offended by any reference to charity and empathy, he ought to be more circumspect as to which houses of worship he enters. I’d expect he would find a warm welcome in any number of megachurches or from ministers preaching prosperity gospel.

For the record, Trump no longer identifies with any particular denomination:

I think it’s o.k. to preach at Trump as long as you tell him what he wants to hear.

That is from way back in 2020, I think. He could have changed his mind 20 times since then…If he is telling the truth at all.

As the tired joke goes, I’m sure he’s accepting of all denominations…fives, tens, twenties….

It’s very on-brand for him, though.

You have the rise of Independent Network Charismatic (INC) Christianity, which basically means a set of churches which are congregational/pastor-focused in governance, and affiliated with one another through leader-to-leader networks rather than denominational hierarchies. In such an individual church, there may be no higher authority than the pastor, who retains all the power in his hands - members can only vote with their feet if they don’t like it, and while there’s usually a lay/staff board to aid in governance in an advisory/support role, they are typically handpicked by the pastor to support him, can be dismissed by him, and all their decisions can be overturned by him. So it’s a very Trumpy kind of leadership style, Fuhrerprinzip writ large and sacralized.

Many of these INC churches are part of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), which is focused on Christian dominionism, the notion that Christians must take control of secular institutions so as to advance the Kingdom of God on Earth. The NAR was a massive support of each of Trump’s presidential runs, between Paula White-Cain and Lance Wallnau, so it makes a lot of sense that Trump would abandon older denominational structures for a network of churches where he gets the love and respect he so desperately craves.

There is a cute meme going around with QE2 and a Bishop on a floor with large black and white squares.

Tariffs.
