I have heard this weird sound bite on the radio a couple of times-I’m trying to figure out what they are trying to help us with. It’s a coversation between two married couples, about one familie’s offspring “Johnny”? The father related how Johnny has been working at the local Chevy dealeship (doing God knows what), andhis wife interrupts to say “Johnny started last week, honey”!
Apparently, dad doesn’t know much about what his sone is up to…and a voice at the end urges us to “know what your family is doing-talk to eachother”.
Exactly what kind of behaviour is the Mormon Church advocating here? That kids should work at the local car dealer?
No. The behavior they’re advocating is having regular conversations with your family.
I’m by no means a fan of the LDS church, but really… There’s nothing bizarre or objectionable to see here.
They used to always have those kinds of PSAs on television that advocated something moral, but didn’t pimp the church except for a brief mention at the end of the spot. Haven’t seen any of them in quite a while, though.
I think I was at least 12 by the time I realized that “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints” and “those crazy Mormons out in Utah” were one and the same.
I agree with everyone else. LDS runs television PSAs in the same vein and has for decades. I can remember seeing them when I was kid. There’s a lot I, as gay man, can criticize the LDS church for, but they have had a long-term interest in promoting strong family ties. And I can’t criticize that.
I have to say that Mormons are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Strong families who seem to care about one another. Good for them! I wish every family was like that.
I ditto here that as far back as the 70s, I was getting the LDS spots to the effect of “be a better-communicating, nicer-to-each-other family” in Puerto Rican TV, in Spanish!
There’s nothing objectionable to these commercials, other than the sappiness.
