Regina Spektor’s song “20 Years of Snow” sounds to me like an attempt to imitate Björk’s unique style. I’ve never heard anyone else attempt this. I think Spektor is very talented but hasn’t settled into a definite style of her own yet and is experimenting with different sounds.
The AMG review of “20 Years of Snow” compares the keyboard sound to a just shaken snow globe, twinkling and tumbling. Spektor sings high-pitched, glassy vocals with little or no discernible tonal center and a subtle use of microtones. In other words, kind of Björkeque.
I like Regina Spektor also. I never noticed that 20 years of snow was anything like Byork. I am going to check it out on my ipod now.
Let me know if you can hear it too or if I’m just trippin.
Johanna, I decided to post while listening, just because I think that is more fun.
The opening strains…before the main piano chords kick in, sound very Bjork-y to me. Never noticed before. I think it is because 20 years was never my favorite song from her.
Now that I can hear the Bjork-ness, this one is growing on me.
The song is beginning to sound less Bjork to me now. But I do notice the way she is using her voice in this song still has some Bjork overtones.
Is it strange that parts of this song also sound almost Paul Simonesque?
For the record, My favorite Regina Spektor songs are Soloman and Buildings.
Too many Bjork favorites to list. I will say that 5 years, All is full of Love, Who is it and Human Behavior all have sentimental value for me.
Uhh…wow. Thanks for the scary movie reviews, everyone. I was pretty much okay with Requiem, so I guess I will watch it. Not tonight, though.
It was fun listening with you, Nzinga, thanks!
