I was wondering if anyone here can point me to a good resource to read up on black major league baseball players in the days before the “gentleman’s agreement” segregated the game. Mainly info on who they were, whether there were lots of them, how they were treated, how well they played, etc.
Do a Google search for Fleetwood Walker who played in 1884. He also had a brother, whose name escapes me at the moment. To the best of my knowledge, they were the only two to play before Jackie Robinson.
OK, got it. They were Moses “Fleetwood” Walker and his brother Welday Walker, who played for Toledo of the American Association (then a major league) in 1884.
