Black Panther, Civil War timeline question. Spoilers!

I just saw Black Panther over the weekend and the first thing I want to say is, “Wakanda Foreva!” The second thing I want to say is “Here’s some roll over spoiler space.”

So, are the events in Black Panther happening concurrently with the events in Civil War or immediately after? I was getting some mixed messages. T’Challa already knows Agent Ross, apparently from the events in Civil War. His sister quips, “Another broken white man we need to fix” when the shot agent is brought to her lab, which makes me think she is referring to Bucky Barnes. But besides that throw away line, there is no mention of any outsiders living or being treated in Wakanda. Also, there was the after credit scene with Bucky indicating he made his way to Wakanda after the events in Black Panther.

It’s been a year since I’ve seen Civil War and I do not remember Agent Ross’ role in it. Wasn’t the explosion that killed T’Chaka part of that (ridiculous to me) revenge plot against the Avengers? Black Panther shows up already king looking to find his father’s killer, right? Please 'splain it to me like I’m dumb. Thanks.

Bonus bullshit: When people see Daniel Kaluuya the all think Get Out but I cannot think of anything else except Fifteen Million Merits.

Rewatched Black Panther last night with my wife. Somewhere in there, someone clearly says T’Chaka was killed a week ago. So the “present day” stuff (not the 1992 stuff) takes place within days after the end of Civil War. (I don’t remember how much time passes in Civil War from his death to the end of the movie.)

i think the post credits scene implies Bucky has been there for a while, but he must have arrived before Shuri says her “another broke white boy” line, so maybe that scenes is a while later, or maybe a week or so was enough for Bucky to heal up, with Wakandan medical tech.

Agent Ross was in Civil War working for the CIA. You see him after Bucky gets arrested and again at the end interrogating Zemo.

Here’s the basic timeline:

  1. T’Chaka and T’Challa both are in the UN explosion. T’Chaka dies.
  2. Steve tries to bring in Bucky safely. T’Challa interferes. He gets “arrested” along with Steve, Bucky, and Sam, they go to the CIA base where T’Challa meets Ross.
  3. The rest of Civil War, ending with Tony, Bucky, Steve, Zemo, and T’Challa all at the base in Siberia.
  4. Presumable, Steve and Bucky meet up with T’Challa outside the base, he takes them to Wakanda for Bucky to be frozen.
5a) Steve goes off to break Sam and Wanda out.
5b) T’Challa brings Zemo to the CIA. In return, Ross keeps quiet about the Black Panther.
  5. The beginning of Black Panther.

Point 6 takes place about a week from Point 1. Civil War only covers a few days.

Also note in the news report about the King’s recent death, they give the correct name for his killer (Zemo, not Barnes). So that news report must have been after the end of Civil War.

In my head I have T’Challa running around doing superhero AND Wakanda shit for, like, two weeks straight.

Oh shit, Dad died and I couldn’t save him!
I must avenge my father’s death!
But first let me collect my wayward girlfriend so that she can attend my coronation.
I really don’t want to kill you mountain gorilla tribe leader. Let’s agree to disagree.
Hey, this Klause guy! Let’s go get him! (Was he part of the stupid revenge plot? How’d he get the hand? Civil War was so long ago.)
Somewhere about here we get Bucky, avenge our father’s death and find out about our father’s feet of clay.
Everything works out in the end.

Klau wasn’t in Civil War. He was introduced in Age of Ultron, as the supplier of the stolen vibranium Ultron used to rebuild himself. Ultron took his arm in that movie. Presumably, he stole a bunch of Wakandan technology along with the vibranium, which is where he got the laser arm he had in Black Panther, but it wasn’t explained in any of the films yet.

The “getting Bucky and avenging father’s death” happened before the “collect girlfriend and get Klau” stuff.

Also, while he just became king, he’s been the Black Panther since before he was first introduced in Civil War (since T’Chaka was too old).

Ah! I saw Age of Ultron and yet. . . too much. . . cannot compute. . . please no Dr. Strange. . . kinda watched it but, dang, fuck Benzocain Cumberbund how to be a whiny-assed bitch for so long in a movie I couldn’t bear to watch it to the payoff.

P.S., I really do enjoy the Marvel Universe. I hope Infinity War and Deadpool keep me as interested in the timeline as this movie has.

Deadpool isn’t part of this timeline…

Yeah, he’s a Marvel character, but he’s still owned by Fox, along with the X-Men. However, now that Disney has acquired Fox…

Disney hasn’t acquired Fox yet.

I stand corrected. The deal has been made, but not finalized yet. Either way, Deadpool belongs to Fox, and is not part of the existing MCU.

In all the 4th-wall-breaking Deadpool has done in the two Deadpool movies, I don’t remember him saying anything MCU-related. Does anyone else? (Probably polite to put examples in spoilers for the people who are behind on MCU stuff, I guess.)
“Give me a bow and arrow, I’m basically Hawkeye.”
"What did i do to piss off a grumpy old fucker with a Winter Soldier arm?
“Zip it, Thanos!”
“Hey, big guy, sun’s getting real low.”
“Black Black Widow.”
“Brown Panther.”
Thanks, Professor Ravenwood!
