Black Panther movie (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

Film Theory makes a good case for Wakanda being on shakey financial footing.

There’s a difference between “I caught up to Klaue, but he slipped out of my grasp” and “I was on my way to kill Klaue, which I totally could have done, but someone else beat me to it”. The former is more humiliating, and Killmonger’s plan depended on T’Challa being humiliated.

No, when Killmonger gets to the Wakanda he challenges T’Challa to combat which apparently was his right as a member of the royal family. If he wins he gets to be black panther and there is nothing anyone can do about it. T’Challa being humiliated serves no purpose other than maybe personal, the previous king had served 30 years and had never captured Claw, so it must not have been a huge deal.

Just because you have the right doesn’t mean that you have support.

Bringing back claw got him support of the Rhino riders. If T’Challa had brought back claw, and he was in the middle of his trial or even execution when Killmonger showed up, he wouldn’t have been given the time of day.

It’s a great point. Seems like the real reason is “the plot required it”.

I think Marvel villains all need to hire Scott Evil to evaluate their plans.
“So I’m going to infiltrate Klaw’s gang, steal vibranium from a London museum with that gang, fly to South Korea to sell it to the CIA, wait for Klaw to be captured, bust him out, take him to a small airport, let him grab my girlfriend, shoot her, shoot him, smuggle his dead body 10,000 miles to Wakanda to earn the support of the rhino tribe, challenge T’Challa as is my right as his cousin, defeat him, and become black panther.”
Scott Evil “Why not just skip everything before challenge T’Challa?”
My theory is that he didn’t want to take his girlfriend to Wakanda and didn’t want to go through the awkwardness of breaking up with her.

BAHAHAHAHAH! Love it, puddleglum.

Oh come on, the only reason they even let him in was because he showed up with Klaue after T’Challa failed when he explicitly promised the border patrol dude that he wouldn’t. Anything other than what happened and Killmonger would just have been a head on a pole.

Fine, but why not do the “kill Klaue” thing a little earlier in the game, before that required breaking him out of a secret CIA prison (whose whereabouts he knew because of…reasons)?

He needed Klaw and he needed the vibranium AND he needed to beat T’Challa getting it. All three had to happen for the plan to work.

What did he need the vibranium for?

I don’t think he needed the vibranium, but he did need T’Challa to fail.

He needed to retrieve the vibranium when T’Challa couldn’t.

And the “reasons” was that they were tracking Claw’s detached arm.

I will admit that his plan would have been simpler if he’d shown up on Challenge Day.

He’d get a spear through the face before he got within 50 miles of the challenge.

Yeah, it seemed like the only ones really ‘allowed’ to challenge on Challenge Day were the heads of the other clans.

No, they asked each clan, and then they asked if there was anyone else of royal blood who wished to challenge, and then Shuri raised her hand… and complained about her corset, and then the gorilla guy issued his challenge. That part where Shuri raised her hand is where Killmonger would have come in.

He had the lip tatoo which meant he was Wakandan and presumably the right to enter Wakanda and tell people who he was.

As there was much ado about him demanding they ask who he was, with most of the people demurring from doing so, I would assume that there is some part of the ritual that requires someone ask. As there was as much resistance to as it as there was, had he not had the support of the rhino riders, which came from bringing in claw, it is probably that no one would have asked, and he would have been sent on his way.
