Ok, I’m finally giving up. I’m trying to think of a Black Sabbath song and I can’t find the title to save my life. It’s a track with Oz, not Dio, and it’s one of the more uptempo songs that they did. I’m also thinking it’s on one of the earlier albums. It’s a hard driving riff based on a minor pentatonic scale, quick for Sabbath but still very evil sounding, but it’s not Children of the Grave. The riff isn’t chorded at all, at least for the intro, which is the part I have stuck in my head.
Duh duh duh duh, duh duh da duh da duh duh da is my Beavis and Butthead rendering if that does anything.
Well, it’s not the best description to go on…Paranoid was the first track to come to mind that seems to fit. (Link goes to a YouTube video of them performing it.)
It’s a 5 tone scale based on the black keys of a piano. It forms the melodic basis for a lot of blues and gospel. “Amazing Grace” is based on the pentatonic scale, as are a lot of walking blues lines.
Dude! YES! That’s totally it! I owe you a round of drinks. I’ve got it playing now, that’s exactly the riff I was thinking of. I don’t know why I decided it was an intro and not a coda, but a million thanks.
Glad I was able to nail it. I mentally parsed the “duh duh duh’s” into 3/4 meter rather than 4/4 and the Black Sabbath riff jumped into my head as somthing that scanned. I figured it might be a song that was easy to overlook because it’s not the riff that normally comes to mind when you think of that title.
Glad it worked. I feel like I earned some “name this _____ from this vague description” stripes today.
My discription was one of the worst ever on the boards, so you’re damned right you earned those stripes today. If anyone needs me I’ll be blasting that song all night long. \m/ \m/
