Black Sabbath fans? (A different poster gives it a try)

The original ‘Black Sabbath fans?’ post had no OP so I thought, since I am a Black Sabbath fan, I’d give it a try. (Unless the hampsters just don’t like Black Sabbath and eat this post as well)

So, are there any Black Sabbath fans out there? What is your favorite album and song?

My favorite song and album are both “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. Though the song “Born Again” off of the album of the same name is a close second. Ian Gillan simply rocks on that song.

Slee

Maybe it’s me that just doesn’t like Black Sabbath.

Or maybe you’re just Paranoid.

A friend of mine once called me, absolutely convinced that Michael Bolton had once been with Black Sabbath. After nearly dying of laughter, I explained that she was mistaken.

I’m a fan of the old Black Sabbath, back when they had Ozzy Osbourne. Their best album, I think, is ‘We Sold Our Soul For Rock and Roll’ and I’d even argue that it’s the best rock and roll CD of all time. I mean, almost every song is a classic. Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man, Snow Blind, Children of the Grave, Sweet Leaf. My favorite, though, is NIB.

Well, thanks for reminding me I’d never finished collecting all of the remastered discs . . . and curse you for making me spend the last 20 minutes finding the ones I did buy.

As for favorites, in my opinion they never topped their first two - the eponymous debut and, of course, Paranoid. I love the 10-minute opus “The Warning” from their debut. Of course there’s plenty good in the later releases as well. My personal favorites are “Supernaut” from Vol. 4 and “Supertzar” from Sabotage.

Sabbath without Ozzy was never really Sabbath, although I thought Ronnie James Dio did a damn good job on Heaven and Hell - “Lady Evil” rocks (as a matter of fact, on the whole, that album is better than Ozzy’s last - Never Say Die).

Oh, DemonSpawn52 - in case you were unaware, We Sold Our Soul . . . is actually a compilation, so of course it’s got all the good stuff. If you haven’t already picked up the original albums (discs? - well they weren’t discs when they were original, dammit), get 'em.

Playing now: “Sweet Leaf”

When I was in high school (mid 80s) I had every Black Sabbath album title and every song title memorized in the order in which they appeared on every album released up to then. I could play a lot of Black Sabbath songs by ear on the guitar. I’m still a Sabbath fan today (though I gave up on buying new releases upon the release of Seventh Star). I’d have to say Paranoid is probably my favorite album. My favorite songs are even harder to choose, but the ones that come to mind right now are War Pigs, Fairies Wear Boots, Black Sabbath (opening track on self-titled album), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Megalomania, and Hole in the Sky.

I’m a big Sabbath fan. I dig “Sabotage” the best and to me, you just can’t beat “Symptom of the Universe”. Iommi, Geezer, Ward and Osbourne were at their peak on this particular song.

Incredible!

Sabbath rule. Paranoid is my favorite cd. My favorite song is Paranoid, followed by Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Electric Funeral, Heavean and Hell and Children of the Sea. Tony Iommi comes up with the best heavy riffs in rock and roll and Geezer Butler can really rip on bass.

Well Slee, your server guess is as good as any.

For all I know, the other closed thread starter didn’t have the time to post an OP or do a search cause he likes choking toys.

or

Maybe was so stoned he didn’t whether he was up or down, whether black is white or blue is brown. It’s quite possible the colors in his life are all different somehow. For all he knows, little boy blue’s a biggirl (not the Brooklyn Biggirl) now.

Actually, You’ll find some Sabbath fans on this thread, as well as a link to Monks who sing medieval chants of Sabbath songs in Latin.

And exactly where would this link be, kind sir?

Dunno about the Monks, but I just got my copy of RONDELLUS: sabbatum - Black Sabbath songs performed on medieval instruments and sung in Latin. Some are chant-style, others are ‘medieval pop song’ style. Pretty cool.

From my “Thank you for your order” e-mail:

Definitely cool, in a PDQ Bach sort of way.
**Hey, I just realized, it was in a white bubblewrap, not a gold-lined box! Dang!!

I am Iron Man!

(Get it?;))

Actually, that was the first song I learned to play on guitar. I’m a fan. Paranoid is my favorite album.

My high school years were spent in an audio haze of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Saxon, Scorpions, and the like. When I hear most of those groups now I kind of wonder what I was thinking at the time. The one exception is Black Sabbath. Their songs still sound amazing to me. One benefit from all the hype surrounding “The Osbournes” is that a lot more Sabbath is getting played now. And that’s a good thing.

Favorite Album: Got to be * Paranoid *
Favorite Song: Varies day by day, but Fairies Wear Boots, Sweet Leaf, War Pigs, and (to give Ronnie James his due) Sign of the Southern Cross are all up there.

Title song from the Album Black Sabbath.
Burned up in the fire, damn it.

Black Sabbath? Oh yeah, count me in. Paranoid is the best album, but there are just too many classic songs to even think about narrowing it down to one. And allow me to throw in my support for the Dio era. Shoved my way to the front row of the Bronco Bowl when they reunited that lineup a decade ago, and it was an absolutely fantastic show. So close I could see the fake tips on Tony Iommi’s fingers. Whoa.

Ozzy years only for me. 'cept fer ‘born again’, although IIRC the subsequent tour featured Bev Beven (of ELO???) on drums as bill ward needed more ‘rest’.

I think all the albums have their merits, my fave probably being ‘Vol 4’ or ‘Masters of Reality’.

Funny this came up today, I just picked up ‘Live at Last’ on CD to replace my poor aging cassette. not quite a bootleg, yet not quite official, it’s a rare glimpse of live Sabbath. check your newsgroups, I picked up a live bootleg called ‘cannabis confusion’ recently, a performance from '73 I think. also got an hours worth of video from French TV of the boys in 1970. listen for the ‘working’ lyrics in all the early live stuff.

few people give Sabbath the respect they deserve. today’s heavy bands know the power of a way too loud, de-tuned guitar, and a lot of them owe a lot to Iomii and Co. If you’re a fan of manson, slipknot, and others of the genre, you’d do well to pick up any of the first 5 Sabbath albums, if only to hear your favorite bands major influence.

Paranoid is definitely my favorite Black Sabbath album. Those guys could (and can still, AFAIK) play. Am I the only one hearing a jazz influence on all the tracks except possibly Iron Man?

My favorite sabbath album was paraniod. Hole in the sky had an energy that only god could explain.

Joe K: for a ‘jazz’ influence, check out the 20 minute version of ‘warning’ on the live at last album. tony does a surprisingly good jazz solo in the middle of his guitar noise solo.

BeatenMan: not to be picky, ‘hole in the sky’ is on ‘sabotage’
