“I apologize if you were hurt, but I do not apologize for what I did. Once again, this is my art practice. My work directly involves black trauma and non-white suffering. I do not believe that there can be social healing without first coming to terms with and expressing our own pain, rage, and trauma.”
I’m gonna file that one under “art student morons” instead. I’ve known a lot of them and dear Lord, the percentage of art students who think that doing something “controversial” (read: petty and stupid) makes up for a complete lack of artistic talent and imagination is disturbingly high.
Oh sure, fine, when THIS GUY does it for “art,” it’s fine; but when I want to build ONE measly Pyramid using authentic methods for art and historical research, the Israeli Consul-General just stares at me like I’ve lost my mind…and just FORGET about getting a Grant, I can tell you that right now!
Bah, humbug. I tell ya, it’s all just a big, teenage popularity contest. Like the Oscars, or the Hague Conventions.
It was a dumb idea because by making an unnecessary protest against a form of racism that has been eliminated, he allowed some people to generalize and claim that all protests against racism are equally unnecessary.
There is a difference between a provocateur and a victim-culture moron. Now if Goldberg painted “Kill the Jews” graffiti on his house and claimed that he did it to provoke discussion of anti-Semitism - you’d have a comparison.
“Victim Culture”. Is that an O’Rielly thing? No, that’s “Culture Warrior”. Can’t have Culture without Cult. I guess this must be another example of what the conservatives claim is an eagerness to be offended. That is so PC, Terr.
Apparently Ashley Powell, the asshole who hung the signs, is an asshole. Fellow students at the Black Student Union denounced Powell’s project as “racist” and “an act of terrorism.”
*More than 100 students turned out to a Black Student Union meeting to discuss the signs.
“There was fear expressed, anger, disappointment – all of that,” according to Oliver.
And then, Ashley Powell, a black graduate student, stood up in the meeting to admit she had hung the signs, claiming it was part of an “art project,” The Buffalo News reports.
Students were reportedly “outraged” and “walked out” of the meeting. Other students denounced Powell’s project as “racist” and “an act of terrorism.”*
I could see a purpose to this project as a reminder of the past that might be useful to everyone. History, sociology, psychology maybe even philosophy…
But to call it an “art project” is total nonsense. There is nothing artistic going on.
