I was looking through the upcoming shows at one of our local performing arts venues, and “The Mavericks & Friends” will be playing at the end of next month. I like The Mavericks, but mostly because of Raul Malo and, sadly, he is no longer with us. Still, I read the description of the event, thinking that depending on the substitute vocalist(s) it might still be worth going.
Imagine my surprise when the write-up stated, “…along with guest singers like Emily West and James Otto.” [emphasis mine]. Boy, did that bring up memories of a board member past. In fact, that user was the only other place I have encountered this musician’s name. A quick search n Mr. Otto’s fan made me realize just how long I’ve been around here.
Anything out in the real world ever immediately make you think of the SDMB, especially from long-gone eras?
Huh? Maybe as a 2009er I haven’t been long enough here on this board, but can you please clarify why a singer named James Otto is significant for this board’s past?
James Otto Sweet Heart from 2012. She was … something. Try this thread to see if it jogs your memory. And there was so much more. Oh, wow. Today is her birthday. How timely. God bless them always!!!
The other day, I was at Home Depot, and noticed a jigsaw. I immediately thought of @Cervaise 's awesome takedown of a telemarketer, all the way back in 2000:
You’ll understand why jigsaws make me think of that thread if you read it. It is quite entertaining.
Yeah I was scrolling through a zombie thread that had gotten bumped the other day (not realizing at first that it was a zombie) and came across a James Otto Sweet Heart “God bless you!!!” post that was a real flashback.
There’s a game I play on my phone that has a super-charged power-up that I have taken to calling the Super Kapowzler. Because that name is stuck in my head forever. And shit.
I liked that guy. I always imagined him sitting there with the biggest spliff imaginable in a big cloud of smoke when posting his hilarious stuff. It was kind of enhanced performance art. He gave me Lee “Scratch” Perry vibes.
God damn, I’d almost forgotten what an artist @Cervaise could be.
Maybe I’m not paying attention, but I feel like the board’s lost some of that kind of craftsmanship in recent years. I still feel privileged to have been around to see it.
I don’t know if we’re playing the same game or not, but from now on I shall call my super-charged power-up the Super Kapowzler. Thanks for that reminder.
