Recently I’ve run across a few weblogs written by people who don’t exist. Apparently, this is a big enough phenomenon to have its own name: “character blogs.” The ‘real’ author of the blog takes on a different persona in order to tell a story or just to look at the world from a different perspective. Here’s a few examples:
Marten Reed, star of the webcomic Questionable Content, now has his own blog entitled Yelling About Music. There’s only one entry so far, so it’s hard to tell what this “story” is going to be like, but if nothing else it should help readers see what goes on in Marten’s head.
The Book of the Gear is a fantasy story told through the journal of Eland the Younger, a scholar and explorer mapping out a legendary “clockwork labyrinth” which doesn’t quite match up with the usual laws of space, time, and logic.
f_dufresne is a fan-made blog of Frank “Doc” DuFresne from the machinima series Red vs. Blue. (There’s also a fan-made blog for Church someplace, but I can’t find the damn thing…)
Anybody got any other character blogs to recommend?
While not actual blogs, the characters of For Better or For Worse each has a monthly letter written in character. Click on the character name, then the “Monthly Letter” link on the subsequent bio page.
The characters of Achewood all maintain blogs. I’m not sure if ‘recommend’ is the right word because Achewood isn’t to everybody’s tastes, but there it is.
-is the site for an ongoing sci-fi/horror story told in blog format.
Each character in the story maintains a blog that gives their perspective on the events. Some characters are directly involved and those tend to read more like Prose than a journal (Dan Milner is the main character http://danmilner.blogspot.com/ ). Other blogs are maintained by characters who are on the periphery or don’t even know about he large story taking place (Marlin Tenzer is periphery character seemingly unrelated to anyone else. http://stabinthedark.blogspot.com/ )
It has been going for almost a month now so there are a lot of back posts but I think if you just read Milner’s and a few random posts from the other blogs you’ll get a good sense of the story so far.
I’m at work and can’t find them right now, but there’s a blog written by Darth Vader that’s hilarious. And over on LJ there’s a whole collection of blogs written by various Buffy characters - most are stupid, but the First Evil’s LJ is great.
My friend Jen occasionally channels the spirit of the Hulk when blogging, which is killer, especially when the Hulk has comments to make on fashion trends.
