Working in the lab today, I had been cutting a bunch of polymer concrete samples on the wet-saw. These things are dense and sharp. I was carrying a handful of samples to the bench, still wet from the saw, and they slipped a bit. In juggling them I reflexively tried to grab them hard, and a sharpish piece caught my thumb against another piece.
Felt like a really hard pinch. Hurt enough for me to swear and drop most of what I was carrying. But at the time I was wearing nitrile gloves (I like them better than latex, they’re a bit sturdier.) So after shaking my hand I checked the glove. Still intact. No worries. So I picked up the pieces and kept working for about 15 minutes.
I was chatting with a co-worker as I was taking off my PPE to exit the lab. I pull off the glove of the pinched thumb.
She stops mid-sentence, goes white, and screams. I look down. My hand is soaked in blood, dripping all over the floor.
:smack:
Somehow, the skin failed underneath the nitrile that didn’t. I seem to have taken the skin off a patch of the side of my thumb about 2 cm in diameter.
Didn’t hurt that much (after all, I had just kept working since it didn’t seem to be anything), but 15 minutes of slow and steady bleeding inside a glove makes a pretty impressive show when you peel the thing off with a dramatic flourish
Three band-aid changes later, things seem to have settled down.
The fun part is - this is the second time in a year I have done this with the exact same co-worker: hidden(and unbeknownst to me) wound under glove, pull glove off in front of her, bleed all over. It probably didn’t help that I’ve been playing entirely too much TF2, so when I saw it, I couldn’t help myself from doing my best Soldier impression and yelling “MEDIC!”
Fun times.
