Both make the list.
What is it about the British? They seem to really enjoy soul music and are very good at it (speaking of Duffy here).

Until pretty recently, there was a chill on white kids in America acknowledging a fondness for black music, especially in the South and rural areas. Not sure the UK had anything comparable.
No, this guy.
On the geologic time scale? “Old school” rap and R&B pop songs were gleefully blasted from car speakers and boom boxes at my redneck high school way back in the last millennium. I have the bruxism damage to prove it.
The James Hunter Six - Minute by Minute
Candie Payne - One More Chance
Love all of these. All of them go on my playlist except for Candie Payne. Not soulful enough for me. I still like her, though.
Haha!
Bad Brains.
Van Morrison & Ray Charles did a version of Crazy Love when Van was conducted into a hall of fame. It’s my favorite version of a song I wouldn’t necessarily have called a soul song in its original incarnation. Van Morrison can just do anything.
Here's another example of Van turning a non-soul shouting song into a killer soul-shouting song. It's that's sappy little Irish ditty that Bing Crosby was famous for - Only it turns out, it was a soul song all along and only Van realized it: That's from the Last Waltz. It opens with Richie Manuel, drunk off his ass and sounding dire, but then Van sings the actual song. Super soul shoutiness at its finest. How about some Delaney & Bonnie & Friends ?
Grootna – “That’s What You Get” (among various others)
Cold Blood – "Your Good Thing"
Smith – “Baby It’s You” (perhaps not smooth enough for your tastes) or “I’ll Hold Out My Hand”
Ha, that’s what i was stopping-by to post. And I agree… how could you not? ![]()
Wow, sweet. Reminds me of Mick Jagger’s falsetto ballads, like “No Use in Crying” or maybe “Fool to Cry.”
Which reminds me… Mick and the Stones could be considered blue-eyes soul on occasion – they covered Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson (especially very early on) – but I actually had trouble coming up with an original soul track by the Stones. Maybe Shine a Light?
Duffy Hanging on too Long
Duffy Stepping Stone
Teena Marie Square Biz
I still can’t believe Teena Marie is dead. ![]()
Oh man, I don’t have time to listen to all of these right now. But I’ll get to them eventually.
The Rascals- People Got To Be Free, especially.
A Little Bit More - Jamie Lidell
Addressed Janis already. I am a fan of I’m Not In Love but it isn’t the sound I’m looking for and SRV is straight up blues. There wasn’t even vocals!
The first video has Ray Charles in it, severely breaking rule number one, the second is Bing Crosby and the third is a straight up blues version of Tura Lura Lural, which I’ll be adding to my collection but not to this playlist.
