Blue hand guys on Firefly, what River was going to become?

I remember in at least episode of Firefly featured the blue hand assassins, I figured they were going to be important to the show but then with its cancellation it went nowhere. They were not mentioned in the movie at all.

Are they the end product of what was done to River(or maybe River was a failure) like fully functional psychic assassins? But then what was the little electronic device they used for?

My understanding is that the specific agents from the show were killed off in one of the comics and the mission was given to the Operative who is the one chasing them in the movie. As far as I know they were to eliminate Simon and return River to the ‘school’ to complete the assassin brainwash. What they are specifically is a mystery, but my guess is cyborg which would explain their resistance to their weird little sonic blood exploder.

They were indeed killed off in the comics. We didn’t learn much about them except:

  1. The blue gloves are part of a blue outfit under the suits.
  2. They were described as “independent contractors” rather than Alliance heavies.
  3. There were apparently only ever two of them.

The problem I have with this is that you cannot have “two by two, hands of blue” unless you have two twos. One pair is not two by two, unless you count by the number of hands involved. But I think they should have been Alliance heavies instead.

I heard a lot about Firefly before I watched it and so I was disappointed by the whole blue hand thing. I know there were so few episodes and had FOX not been horrible, maybe it would have been an ongoing storyline, but I figured it would have been more significant in the show/movie than it ended being, based on all the chatter I heard. Sure, they were menacing and all, but they hardly played a significant role in every episode, which was kind of the feeling I had before I watched for myself. Not a complaint, just an observation that it leaked out into my observable universe more than some other details.

Yeah, I’m disappointed that there haven’t been people taking up the storyline and running with it after the series cancelled. Seriously, a decade after the fact it is obvious that there is plenty of meat left to pick, storywise, and there is certainly enough fan support to maintain a rather lengthy comic series based on it, at the very least. Including more info on just what River’s end metamorphasis was supposed to be…and what it could be outside of the Alliance.

I could swear that one of the commentaries mentions that the blue suits are to protect against that sonic brain bleeding device.

I’m pretty sure that River was a prototype, so to speak. There were no “finished products” of what she was being turned into.

Two blue hands on one operative and two blue hands on the other operative. Two by two, hands of blue.
