Boards Hacked??

Unless you have an ISP with DHCP, Handy (like me, and like most non-US posters, I’d guess).

Without going into a lot of detail – the situation is still being looked at – a program off a “hacker” web site was used to gain administrative access to the SDMB.

Yes, the exploit used a known security flaw in earlier versions of vB to do this.

Jerry had the choice of upgrading to a newer – and probably buggier – version of vB (and losing all the fixes we’ve put in of late, including the ones that give us the speed and flexibility we have now) or nailing up the security hole and going forward with what we have.

As you see, Jerry opted for the latter.

Thanks, yojimbo! Also,thanks Jerry!

DHCP is used just as much here as it is everywhere else I imagine…depends on the ISP. Some ISPs cross-reference their DHCP logs with their authentication logs though, meaning it’s potentially possible to find out who the schmuck is.

Did whoever this jerk hacker is delete any threads, or screw up the search function? I went away for the weekend, and just checked to see who responded to my “Welcome, New Teenaged Dopers!” thread in the Pit, but it’s not showing up anywhere, including in search.

So, did my thread get deleted in the process of hacker-boy’s little romp? Also, is it possible to restore any stuff that got deleted <crosses fingers in naive hope>?

Don’t mean to be a bother, I’m just kinda curious.

You mean Welcome, New Teenaged Dopers! Don’t make me kill you? The dog ate your search.

Sorry friedo. I obviously assumed that most US posters had always-on cable connections.

Most people in the US still use analog dialup, which is almost always assigned dynamically. Most cable and DSL providers here use DHCP as well. (And PPPoE for authentication, since smart people started just buying their own cable/dsl routers and plugging themselves into the network. Heheheh.)

Son of a…well, it would seem I need to go have a little talk with my search function. Thanks, picmr.

Weird…

Actually friedo almost all cable modem providers use static IP’s while almost all DSL providers use DHCP.

Do you have a cite for that? My experience has been that nearly all cable people are DHCP as well. When I look at the IP listings in vBulletin, I typically see numerous IPs in the same Class D range for cable people.

I think you mean Class C.
