My 8-year-old daughter learned to read when she was 3. She won 2nd place in the District Writing Contest this month. Last year she won 1st place.
She also wrote 3 short stories (on her own) and her 2nd grade teacher liked them so much, she had my daughter go around to each 2nd grade class and read them aloud.
My soon-to-be-three year old son recently began crawling and walking a little bit too, all at once. He has mild cereberal palsy and his therapists thought it would take him a lot longer to learn to walk and that he would never be able to crawl. He’s surprised them all. He is now hell on wheels, which is a very good thing.
My HS fresh. daughter was named her school’s student of the quarter in health. Of course, considering that they were studying sex and drugs, I’m not sure if that is a good or a bad thing! Her comment, “I just wish it were in a subject I give a darn about.”
Actually, the COOLEST thing is she just got back from a band trip to DisneyWorld. (Hope she didn’t put too much of that Health expertise to use!) When I got home from work, she was in her room unpacking, yakking on the phone with her friend. I knocked on her door and said “Hi.” She said “Wait a minute” to her friend, put the phone down, and came over and gave me a big hug. That didn’t suck!
Son just took ACT and scored significantly above the nation’s average for college bound seniors. He’s 13. Is most excited that he may have developed a new species for his D&D group.
The 11 year old has recently taken an intense interest in sewing. In the last week she has learned to crochet, made an apron for herself on her mom’s machine, handsewed a stuffed mouse and a bed for it, and started embroidering all of her friends’ names on a cloth. Her next project is going to be to make pajama-type pants. And she is a wicked good cardplayer. Her faves are gin and poker.
Don’t have a child - and don’t know if it counts as brilliance - but, I have to say what I love about my nephew. He’s two, and the sweetest guy around. This has happened a couple times - he will go to the phone and say “Call Aunt Sue?”. Then, my sister dials, and he gets on the phone and tells me all about his day. So cute! I don’t see him that often - every few months - and I never knew how well he would remember me. I also was telling him about Florida a few months ago - and I told him about alligators. I taught him “What do alligators do?” - hold our arms like an alligators jaws (open) - and clap them together - “Clomp”. I didn’t think he’d remember it - but a few days before I came to visit again, he was doing that for the rest of the family. Very sweet.
Hey Susan - nieces and nephews can be great fun. If he likes that alligator chomp, you’ve gotta teach him the song - with hand movements -
She sailed away
on a bright and sunny day
on the back of a crocodile."
(I’d post more but fear the prohibition against posting entire lyrics!)
Nieces and nephews are great fun. I’m the hit of the kids’ table at family gatherings. (And the bane of my sisters and in-laws when they find out what their darlings learned.) Not sure why anyone would waste time with those grownups. Just make sure you stock up on booger jokes ahead of time!
Daddy’s Little Angel, aka Insanity Girl, is two and a bit. She likes to go to an indoor playground (too cold for outdoor playing here and now) to see the other kids. Last Monday we went there and she got into six fights over the course of three hours.
When we went back on Wednesday, as I was strapping her into her car seat, I told her I didn’t want her getting into any fights this time. She looked at me, cocked her head, and held up her hand with finger and thumb about an inch apart and said “Little bit fighting?”
I’m already making plans to purchase a “My Juvenile Delinquent Can Beat Up Your Honour Student” bumper sticker.
My 19 year old is in a punk band that is popular in the Phillipines. He has screamed ‘f* you’ from stages all over Europe, America, and Canada. His band tours Australia and Japan this spring.
My 16 year old taught himself to count out loud to 130 when he was 28 months old (he’s the scary smart one). He can sleep for 14 hours straight. He keeps all his clothes in a pile in the middle of his floor.
My 13 year old daughter can talk on the phone on a conference call with her friends AND be in an internet chat room with the same 3 friends at the same time, while simultaneously downloading songs from Kazaa.
Baby tlw is 8.5 months old and has a vocabulary of about two dozen recognizable (if far from appropriately pronounced) words, including mama, dada, gamma, doggie, milk (meaning that she wants to nurse) and sleep. We’re pretty proud of her. She’s also trying desperately to walk.
