Bob Jones University says "we're sorry"

Since their racist past just won’t go away quietly, they are apologizing again for the bans they had on admitting black students until the 1970’s and bans on interracial dating or marriage until 2000.

They can make all the claims and apologizes they like, but they can not change the fact that they argued before SCOTUS (who took away their tax exemption) that the ban was based on sincerely held religious beliefs.

Morons.

Ha… Rules against interracial relationships? Funny how they outright banned black people all-together before 1970. How could you justify that from a Christian perspective?

I got news for these religious assholes. If there is a God (my money’s on no), his number one, top notch priority is that you not be assholes to each other. It’s a pretty big theme of the New Testament. I don’t remember any part of the Bible that told you to go out and start judging people.

The SCOTUS case was Bob Jones University v United States. 1983.

What’s rather amusing is how they went about it, in 1971 they started admitting black students, but only if they were married to another black person. In 1975 they finally allowed unmarried black students as long as they didn’t date or encourage others to date ‘outside their race’.

From Antinor’s link:

I’ve breezed through the Wiki entry on Constitutionality but it doesn’t greatly assist.

If unconstitutionality isn’t the same as illegality then what is achieved by making a law unconstitutional?

Please forgive any tangentiality.

Why would any black person even want to go to an institution such as Bob Jones?I know, I’ll go to school where I know everyone dislikes me based on the color of my skin, even if they have to shut up about it. Sounds smashing.

Also do they sell hats that say BJU? Because that would be hilarious.

As far as I know they have a bunch of different things with BJU on them. If you want a hat, I’ll ask my brother to bring on home for christmas. He’s getting a masters in divinity at BJ.

Better to get a divine BJ than divinity from BJ, but to each their own. I noticed in Wikipedia that they also have something that they call the “BJ Museum” but I’m sure if I were to check it out, I’d be sorely disappointed.

And thank you sincerely for the offer, but I’ll just stick with my South Carolina “Cocks” hat.

In Brown vs. Board of Education SCOTUS ruled that segregation in a public school was unconstitutional. Private institutions (like BJU) can institute all the crazy, bigoted, discriminitory rules that want and it’s all legal. They do risk their tax-exempt status and the ability of their students to use public financial aid to study at them.
