Bond "In-Jokes" in Die Another Day ***Spoilers***

Just saw Die Another Day this evening (I liked it, but I’ll leave opinions for other threads), and noticed several in-jokes for Bond afficiaonados. I figure there are probably more of them than those I noticed, thus this thread.

Ones I noticed (and remember):

  • Bond picks up the bird book that Ian Fleming got his Bond character name from

  • Article about the diamond guy in Iceland has “Diamonds Are Forever” at the bottom of the page

  • Halle Berry comes out of the water exactly like Ursula Andress did (was that from Dr. No?)

  • Not really an in-joke because they tell you, but Q has some retro bond gear, including the boot with the knife in the toe and the jet pack Bond used in… well, whatever that movie was.

As you can tell by this post, I am not a Bond expert, but just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous. Anyone want to fill in the blanks, and add any other Bond references/jokes that I missed?

By the way, that boot with the knife that pops out of the toe was used by the Bond villian, not by Bond, wasn’t it? IIRC, it was the older Russian lady on a train…

The jet pack was from Thunderball.
While swimming under the ice, Bond uses the rebreather from Thunderball.
The shoe with the blade was from From Russia With Love–as was the attache case with the pop-out knife–Lotte Lenya as Rosa Klebb wore the shoe, but in a Venice hotel room, not on the train.
The attempt to secretly film Bond having sex in a hotel room refers to an incident in From Russia With Love.
When Bond hands Graves the diamond, Graves quips, “Diamonds are for everyone.”
Q’s mention of the Aston-Martin’s ejector seat and his line about never joking about his work pay tribute to a scene from Goldfinger.

The alligator submarine from Octopussy in R’s lab.

When R hands Bond his watch, he says “This is your twentieth, isn’t it? I wish you’d bring this one back in one piece.”

Isn’t the car Bond drives in Cuba (the old Chevy) the same one he drove in the other movie in which he went to Cuba?

Actually, the John Cleese character is called “Q”, not “R”, which is proper. He is the head of “Q Branch” which is MI-6’s Quartermaster division.

He was only jokingly called “R” by Bond in the previous movie, since he was designated to be the old Q’s successor. I was relieved that they let that joke die!..Timmy

The Union Jack parachute was earlier used in The Spy Who Loved Me.

According to the IMDB, OHMSS(On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) is written on a CD on Moneypenny’s desk, and the micro jet plane from Octopussy is also in R’s storage.

Er, that should be Q (not R) I guess…

Q frequently states that he never jokes about his work and implores 007 to grow up.

I was aware that there were plot rehashes going on (Goldeneye, Diamonds are Forever, etc.) but I was enjoying it too much to see the little details.

That was a '57 Ford Fairlane, one of which (in black) features in a chase in, uh, Dr. No, I think. That was set in Jamaica, however. The other film in which he went to Cuba was Goldeneye, but he drove a BMW roadster in that one, which must have stood out quite a bit in the Socialist Paradise.

I believe Little Nelly, the gyrocopter from You Only Live Twice, can be glimpsed in the background in one of the scenes with Cleese.

Anyone know where I can get a life?

Bond re-uses the laser-shooting watch from Goldeneye
The heavily-armed but sleek silver Aston-Martin sports car is a tribute to Thunderball, even if it is a modern Vanquish instead of a DB-5.
Many, many props from the Roger Moore Bond movies in the storehouse, including a really stupid “Indian Rope Trick” device from, I believe, Octopussy

You guys have caught most of the others I saw…

Is the “Hong Kong Yacht Club” in the beginning a reference to another film? I figured it had to be, since Bond knew he could walk in there all disheveled and still get a room and fresh clothes.

There was a reference to the famous laser scene in Goldfinger (“Do you expect me to talk Goldfinger?” “No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die”) when Jinx (Halle Berry) was chained to the laser robot thing.

The line was something like
Zao: “She won’t talk now. Kill her”
Mr. Kil: “I’ll use the laser”
and then the laser moved very slowly toward Jinx.

I’m not really sure what happened for the next minute or so because that line was so funny.
