My mom has gotten herself into a quest of identifying various works on another message board(why don’t we ever have any quests around here?). The one she is currently struggling with is a novel by a South American author. The plot goes something like this:
An woman lived with her parents or aunts/uncles, then they died, she ended up being somewhat wealthy so she decided to take a journey and set for the sea. On the ship she is courted by a good looking young man, she falls for him and they get married in a port along the way. As the voyage continues another good looking man starts paying attention to her. Her new husband gets jealous, and she and the new guy schedule a secret date at the next port the ship was gonna stop at. She goes to the date, but the new guy doesn’t show up, so she goes back to the ship and in her cabin she discovers the new guy and her husband in bed together. Stricken with grief she jumps overboard and dies. The book ends with the husband telling the new guy that he kind of liked “this one” like he would an old aunt, implying that they’ve been running this scam for a while.
Anyone know what this novel is called and who wrote it? It supposedly came out before 1980.
