Book identification help

There was a book that I remember reading approximately one chapter of probably back in the early to mid 80s. The beginning was very creepy and eerie and I have tried to enter certain words into Google with the hope of finding something but so far no luck. Maybe someone here has an idea of what the heck I’m referring to?

I have very little memory of this book except for the beginning, which began with people who, for some reason, were buried up to their necks in sand next to a beach with an incoming tide. The people were obviously going to drown. That is basically the only thing I can recall about this particular book.

I recall being creeped out about it but for some reason I never read the entire book. Anyone have any clue as to what book this may be?

Thanks for any suggestions:)

No ideas??

Ugh I would really love to find out what book this was. I know it was a novel type book, that’s the only other info I can remember. I know it’s not much.

Could it have been CREEPSHOW?

No, I don’t believe so.

Thank you for the suggestion though!

Your description rings a bell – not for a book but for something on film. Googling brought up several “buried alive” scenarios, but nothing like what you’re describing. Which is very creepy, by the way, so if I have nightmares tonight, it’s on you.

I’m seeing big ol’ crabs walking up to the heads. ::shudder::

It really does sound like the sequence “Something to Tide You Over” from Creepshow. There was a comic adaptation, maybe you read that?

Well, I have seen many times that memory for some reason tells dopers to disregard the most likely examples.

As it turns out your description does fit Stephen King’s Creepshow, it had the tale called “Something to Tide You Over”, could it that you read a novelization of the movie?

Maybe what you read was not a horror novel? Was it comedy? War related? With Pirates?

Ooh, I hope I didnt cause you nightmares.
To GIGObuster,Quimby, and The Other Waldo Pepper:

I think “Something To Tide You Over” may be it! Especially when I read that passage quoted by GIGObuster.

I’m going to look into that further. Thanks all for your help!

I’ve read The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest Gaines a couple of times and can tell you I’m almost positive that wasn’t it.
