This time of year, chairs need mukluks.

Why not? You can get scarves for windows - what’s wrong with socks for chairs?

(BTW, I think both chair socks and window scarves are horrid!)

Is anyone else reminded of the supposed Victorian practice of putting trousers on chair legs, or is that just me?

Surely someone was being whooshed there? I can’t believe that they would have actually done that.

Just goes to show that perversion is in the mind of the beholder, and no matter how far we try to cover up, it will never go away. (Actually, I’ve found that uncovering is an excellent cure for these mental conditions. It removes all mystery.

They’re argyle socks, I always thought they weren’t cool, so they wouldn’t look cool on chairs. I guess it’s better than white tube socks.

Why not? Beds have skirts, and I have never understood that one.

I thought that was so you could hide the unsightly stuff like bedpans and laundry.

I can’t help thinking about the poor people in third-world countries . . . whose chairs have to go barefoot.

It’s to keep the monster hidden.

I think I saw these the other day somewhere, and I assumed that in addition to any fashion statement made by the chair socks, they were supposed to have some function such as reducing abrasions on hardwood floors or some such. But maybe not.

Argyle socks? Clearly, they’re to hide the Argyle gargoyle.

You people are just too pampered. Here in Cleveland, we crochet cozies for our parking meters and trees. It’s freaking cold out there!

It was a whoosh. From Wikipedia, the easiest one to find:

Apparently Americans picked it up and turned it around, joking about the prudishness of the English.

Furniture was commonly swathed in drapery, but not just because it hid cheap furniture–also because everyone was using fires for heating, and cloth is much easier to clean than wood and brick. If you covered your mantlepiece with drapery, you didn’t have to scrub the soot off the mantle nearly so often.
I should also note that all those layers of clothing were considered very alluring. Besides the tight corseting that showed off the figure, you could imagine all those layers coming off…one by one…very titillating. Covering something up is a sure way to make it more interesting–and sometimes I wish some modern people would remember that…

I don’t know about chair socks but I just wasted 2 hours looking through that website. How cool is some of that stuff!

We all know that after a few weeks, one of those socks will end up missing. The Missing Sock Monster doesn’t discriminate.

It is only a matter of time until Manolo Blahnik comes out with leather chair shoes at $1200 each.

Just make sure you don’t put white chair shoes on your chairs after Labor Day.

You have to be careful; knitters and crocheters will make cozies for anything that will stand still long enough.

Me, I made one Nintendo DS cozy and forced myself to stop.

I think those socks are kind of cute. I may just have to make some. Looks better than old tennis balls.

I’ve made a Nintendo DS cozy as well. I was rather proud of it–it was the first thing I designed by myself. It had a carrying strap and pockets for game cartridges and you could plug in the charger without taking it out of the case. I gave it to my sister–I can’t keep everything, you know!

I’m wearing argyle socks today, too. Perhaps I’m just totally odd.
