Can anybody tell me what he best PCI graphics card is at the moment for games. I don’t have an AGP slot, and at the moment I have a Voodoo 3 3000.

I you are limited to PCI slot and no AGP I’m going to guess that you have a 400 MHz or slower CPU so many of the latest hardware intensive games may not perform all that well regardless of your graphics capability… but anyway one of the fastest PCI Video Cards available is the
VOODOO5 5500 PCI VIDEO CARD 64MB VOODOO 3DFX
Appears to be around 100 - 125 on Ebay
"The Voodoo5 5500 PCI from 3dfx is the next stage in the evolution of ultra-high resolution gaming. Utilizing a revolutionary scalable architecture, the Voodoo5 5500 PCI features dual 3dfx VSA-100 chips for more 3D horsepower. Working in parallel, these processors produce over 667 Megatexels per second to create extraordinary 3D worlds in vivid 32-bit color. Boasting state-of-the-art Real-Time Full-Scene HW Anti-Aliasing, the exclusive T-Buffer Digital Cinematic Effects engine, 64MB of graphics memory for top performance and support for 2D resolutions as high as 2048x1536, the Voodoo5 5500 PCI gives today’s PC gamers the raw 3D power and premium 2D performance they crave.

I have some questions too, and as this OP seems to be somewhat answered, I’d like to ask:
How the HECK can I turn off or down my modem’s volume? (I’m afraid I’m disturbing housemates.) I’ve turned it off in the modem properties, after installing the latest driver from the vendor web site, and it did nothing.
My computer takes it on itself to switch between windows on its own initiative. I’ll be typing an IM, and it will make the buddy list the active window, over and over, but only sometimes. Other nights it acts fine. If I run a ppt show, it will throw up the program window over the show until I minimize the program.
I’m planning to get the real Windows and Office CDs and just wipe this drive, but until then I’d like to know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.
I have a 566 Mhz Intel Celeron. I have 192 MB ram.
UT, Deus EX, Kingpin all work perfectly on the Highest detail settings. Q3 and B&W work ok on medium settings.
Thanks for the Voodoo advise, but since 3DFX are no more, I want an Nvidia card, any ideas.
Oh and **Cardinal ** try this:
start menu, settings, control panel, modems, properties, and there should be a volume control here.
advice even, duh, I even previewed it
Manc , stick with your V3 3K then since the only Nvida card with a PCI slot that is selling from aria ia the Tnt2 M64
which runs slower than the V3 3K or just get another board
you can get a celeronboard with agp from aria (longsite) at about 40£ and put a geforce 2 in it for another £40 or hell get a fast AMD duron board since durons run faster than celerons and are cheaper to boot
I am curious about this since, IIRC, from a timeline perspective AGP slots generally marched in with the 300-350 mhz class machines. I have never heard of a 566 mhz class unit without an AGP slot unless the video is on the motherboard or, for whatever reason, the MB had to be designed to unusual specs. Is this your situation?
How would you define ‘best’? I mean how would we know what you want it for? To me the best might be an All In Wonder PCI card because it has tv plus s-video & a/v in/out.
Also, what operating system?
[quote}start menu, settings, control panel, modems, properties, and there should be a volume control here.[/quote]
Yeah, I did that, and it not the slightest effect. That’s my whole point.
No one’s heard of a computer switching between windows by itself?

Yeah, I did that, and it had not the slightest effect. That’s my whole point.

In the modem properties dialog box under “connection > advanced” in Win98 there is a line where you can enter AT commands which will give the modem commands upon dialing activation. Might be worth trying.
ATM0 usually shuts the speaker up.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q164/6/60.asp
SUMMARY
"Below are modem commands that can be used with AT (Hayes) compatible modems. All commands are used with the ‘AT’ prefix. For example, to manually set the speaker volume to medium, the ATL2 command would be entered in a communications program (such as Terminal or Hyperterminal).
NOTE: These are general modem commands. Certain commands may not work with all modems. Consult the documentation for your modem if you experience difficulties, or contact your modem manufacturer’s technical support department.
<snip>
The following command controls the modem speaker volume when the speaker is turned on.
L0,1 : Selects low speaker volume.
L2 : Selects medium speaker volume.
L3 : Selects high speaker volume.
Mn : (Speaker Control)
This command selects when the modem speaker will be on or off.
M0 : The speaker is always off.
M1 : Enables the speaker during call establishment, but off after the carrier is detected.
M2 : The speaker is always on.
M3 : Disables the speaker during the dialing period and receiving carrier, but on during answering.
Additional information may be found at the Hayes Web site and the US Robotics Web site. Also, your modem manufacturer may have additional information about AT commands that your modem supports"
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you.
I didn’t get a variable volume control, or even a “low” setting, but at least I got it all the way off, and now I know how to get the sound back on and off if I need to. That ATL0 worked to turn it off.

Thats it, the motherboard came with onboard AGP (which was crap). Intel 8810 or something like that.
