Disc 1 - remastered CD
Disc 2 - 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert DVD
Disc 3 - documentary on recording the album
My question … I can pre-order from Borders for $30 with free shipping. It lists for $40. Any informed predictions on what Best Buy and the like will sell it for when it comes out 11/15?
The DVD’s are fantastic! I’m not such an audiophile that I can really comment on the remastering of the CD.
On the 1975 show I was taken by the lack of prominence of his guitar (he did almost half the songs without it). Also that he didn’t use the whole stage as much as when I first saw him in 1978. Anybody know whether that was typical in those days or whether it was becaused he was pissed about the hype leading up to that show?
The “making of” dvd is also great. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who looked like a dork with some of the things I wore in the early-mid 70’s. The info on how the Appel/Landau change took place was interesting and it was nice to see Appel appear and the way they were all decent to each other.
Special Bonus: In my pre-release reading on the box I didn’t see any mention of the three-song performance from 1973 (Spirit, Circus Story and Thundercrack) that is on it. Vinnie Lopez is on drums. In some ways it is better than the 1975 concert.
I could write more but don’t want to hog all the fun.
As much as I disagree with your politics, your taste in music is impeccable. I have ordered the 30th anniversary set from Amazon and it should be arriving soon. I can’t wait!
Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday. Haven’t played more than “Born To Run” and “Thunder Road” on the CD yet, and barely got 30 minutes into the DVD before I had to leave. But so far…
That was the first tour with Steve Van Zandt in the band which freed Bruce from having to provide all the guitar parts during live shows. And I don’t know how large the Hammersmith Odeon is but Bruce was doing pretty much smaller venues with not so large stages back then. The Darkness tour in 1978 was the first where he began doing larger arenas and taking advantage of the bigger stage.
Mmmmm… I lost my Born to Run album, so maybe this is a good excuse to pick up a replacement.
Anyone with a good ear have any opinions about the remastering? I’ve never really found too much lacking with the original (except for She’s The One, which must have been recorded under different circumstances than the rest of the album, as it’s the one track that seems to have way too much hiss/distortion), and I’d be hesitant to spend money on an album that sounded too different.
My ears are not well trained but I once read that “She’s the One” is essentially in mono. I guess it was recorded in stero but the mix for the left and right channels are identical so there’s no difference.
