Take it easy, with lots of hot bathes and good, warm liquids, Bosda.
Then find a witch doctor. No, the witch doctor isn’t for you (although you could try), the witch doctor is for that person that made you drive 200 miles just to stain your shirt and rip your pants, in your condition.
I’ll second Robyn on the hot shower. When I have it, a hot steamy shower breaks the dam, and the stuff clears out fast, for a while at least.
It’s expensive over the counter, but if the yellow crud is related to hay fever, I also recommend Claritin to keep your sinuses open. Hay fever causes mine to swell shut, and that’s how the crud grows.
Finally, if you drain enough down your throat and into your lungs, you may start coughing up yellow-greenish plastic chunks, GET TO THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY FOR STRONGER ANTIBIOTICS. At that point, you’re a hair’s breadth away from serious bronchitis and/or pneumonia. Been there and done that…
I’m not Jewish, so I can’t send chicken soup, and my copy of The Princess Bride has been packed away for my big move. Sorry.:
I just got over it. The scariest part was the high fever that lasted 2 days.
Drink lots of orange juice, and for the sinus stuff, try a cup of hot water with a tablespoon of salt and a few drops of Tobasco.
The salt will soothe your throat and the tobasco will loosen the sinuses.
Yuk. I feel your pain, Bosda. I get at least one sinus infection every year - terrible allergies - but yours sounds worse than most.
Usually I spray Lysol all over everywhere to kill the wee beasties. Eat all the popsicles you can get your hands on (fluids, donchaknow.) Believe it or not, it might also help to open a window some to let some clean fresh air in, as long as you don’t get cold. Maybe you could open a jar of good strong horseradish under your nose to get stuff moving in the sinuses.
Also, just like everybody else said: take your meds until they’re gone. Please. And don’t put the horseradish up your nose. That could be bad.
Ah, the infamous Schomit. I believe we had a thread about this at some point…
OK, I’ll just throw some home herbal remedies at you.[ul][li] Tea Tree oil, very easily found at any health food store/herbal shop/organic section of a good supermarket is powerful stuff. If your throat is scratchy from post-nasal drip (bacteria from the sinus infection can drip down your throat, irritating it) you might want to drop a few drops worth into a bottle of water. The tea tree oil is a fairly potent natural antiseptic, and it’ll help the secondary infections in your throat. []I always keep ginger root frozen in my freezer. When I’m sick, I grate up about 2 TBS worth using the tear-drop side of a four-sided grater, add enough honey to make it a thick paste, add lemon juice and poor boiling water over it. The ginger will soothe your throat and help move stuff in your sinuses, the lemon acts as a mild antiseptic, and the honey acts as a demulcent. (loosens muscus). And it’s warm and yummy. []If you don’t feel like you have the energy to take a shower (been there) you can get the same steamy effect by pouring about three inches of boiling water into a pasta pot, putting that on your kitchen table, and leaning your head over the pot, while draping a towel over your head. The steam, combined with gravity will help the conjestion. If you want to get all fancy, you can add some tea tree (it’s potent, be careful.)[] If you can take it, raw garlic is great for bad sinuses. Good for your immune system, and cleans out the sinuses. [] It’s totally icky to think about, but ever since I boughta neti pot I haven’t had any sinus infections since. I’ve had a few bad colds, but generally that’s only because I don’t catch them in the early stages with the Neti pot. It’s icky, but it works. [/ul][/li]
Sleep a LOT. I know it’s hard to when you can’t breath, but I’ve found that Thereflu is a gift from the gods. It’ll knock you out, and you get the added benefit of it being tea-like. Be sure to get the night-time formula.
Oh great. I wake up with a cough this morning, now I read this.
Last year I had the docs scratching their heads. I was even tested for diptheria. They finally gave me this antibiotic called Augmenten, which I’ve heard is pretty heavy duty.
This is exactly what happened to me last week. Started as a sinus infection, ended up as bronchitis and laryngitis. I completely lost my voice. Call the doc for stronger antibiotics if this happens. I ended up taking 2 z-packs at once. So, take care. Lots of X’s and O’s for you, Bosda.
Vick’s VapoRub never fails to make me feel better when I have a yucky throat/nose. Slather it liberally on your chest and neck, wrap a towel around your neck and clothes-pin in shut, crank up the humidifier and breathe. TheraFlu is also good for the throat.
I’ve also found that Barcoloungers are great for sleeping when you can’t get horizontal due to sinuses protesting or a hacking cough.
I’m sick too, Bosda. I was fine when I got up this morning and went to class, but after I got back from my first one, within ten minutes I was down. Sneezing a lot, runny nose, throat hurt, nose so friggin clogged I only breathe out my mouth (and when I tried that sometimes my upper lip would be almost sucked right in… weird). I went to the nurse and they stuck a thermometer in my mouth and told me to keep my mouth closed. Obviously, the temperature that it read was off (wtf? I can only breath out my mouth, of course I’ll keep it open or else I’ll die). Least I got to go home early.
Went home and lied down on my bed and slept for a good 5 hours. Felt better. I’m still going to try to stay home tomorrow though.
Frequent sinus infection sufferer checking in. I second the ginger advice and the antibiotic advice, and the steam/chicken soup/other hot liquid advice. But never underestimate the power of the humble chili pepper. The best thing in the whole world for a sinus infection is Vietnamese pho (beef soup with rice noodles, chili, ginger, beansprouts, Thai basil, onion, and lime). If you don’t have a Vietnamese grandma hand, it should taste pretty good if you just toss some japalenos, ginger, and lime into your soup.
One time I was really really sick, just laying there all weak and limp. I knew I could have just given up but it was Sunday night and I really didn’t want to miss Simpsons. It was the episode where Maggie saves Homer from drowning. I think that show saved my life.
