Boston Legal 1/16

There’s still Bethany and her mom in action, plus more hijinks at the wackiest law firm on TV. See you later.

Alan: Did you try going to the top?
Denny: Cheney?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

A thoroughly depressing episode for a young teacher and her husband watching at the OMD household.

A household where conversations revolving around the same talking points as Schmidt’s closing come up on a too-frequent basis.

I love Denny Crane: “I’m just nuts about America.” And I loved the scene in the courtroom where all the Denny Cranes stood up. Some of the lines though: “By midnight my head will be the center of a thigh sandwich.” I wouldn’t of thought they’d let you say that on TV . . . .

Not my favorite episode. I felt for the teacher – I feel for all teachers – but how one-sided was that case? Wealthy parents with alternatives they don’t try, teacher’s back is turned because her father just died and she doesn’t want to upset the kids with her tears. What’s to consider? The jury had no choice. And who didn’t see it coming, when the teacher decided to go into real estate?

Episode was way too preachy and obvious, but good points made, about talented people leaving teaching and/or not going into public service.

“Hire all the Steves!”

Who’s Mark Cuban (sp?)?

He’s the very outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks, among other things.

Oh yeah, it was a stacked deck. It was a chance for the writers to get on a soapbox about how crappy it is to be a public school teacher. El Perro Fumando has a legitimate, persistent, non-specific fear of parents bringing lawsuits. Especially when she has a classroom full of special-needs students who all have a “requires extra time and/or attention” requirement (how do you fulfill “extra time” for fifteen kids at once? If they all have the same “extra” time, then it’s just “time” for all of them together). Schmidt said it well during the closing (which was the shining soapbox moment): We expect our teachers to teach, police, be daycare, counselors, dietitians, janitors, and nurses. All on an average $32000 per year to start. And that pay scale really doesn’t ramp up too quickly.

Bottom line: public education is broken, and nobody in power is looking to fix it.

Sure, the episode was very preachy about it, but it doesn’t mean every point wasn’t perfectly valid.

Were the allegations made against Homeland Security accurate?
If you get on the no fly list, can you not get off?
I guess Clarence/Clarice is to be a continuing character. His name is now on the pre-show lineup. I kind of liked Oprah.
Alan can’t handle women who are aggressive? I knew how that was going to end.

I think Teddy Kennedy managed to get himself off that list, so its possible.

I suppose you could get off the no-fly list eventually, but I think it takes a lot longer than it should and the whole thing gets carried to ridiculous extremes. There have even been cases of toddlers being kept off of planes because their names were the same as, or similar to, names on the watch list.

The teacher storyline hit a nerve. I don’t teach K-12, but I had a problem some time ago in a college classroom that was infested with yellowjackets. Maintenance wouldn’t do anything, so I finally got a senior faculty member to intercede with the division office and get my class moved to a safer room. I don’t have bee sting allergies, but was afraid that a student might, and with yellowjackets being so aggressive…well, you can imagine the scenario running through my head. I would have insisted that the college was liable for any problems, not me. I hope I’m right.

why isn’t denny crane getting some of julie bowen like allan, jeffery and brad?
