Well, while I believe I’m familiar with the songs that get played ad nauseam around this time of year, I’m less knowledgeable about who wrote them.
Sounds like maybe he wrote a poem that was turned into a carol?
I do happen to know a lot about that subject, but I’m still comin’ up blank.
Please ask all earned “Are you Firstname Lastname?” questions by noon EST tomorrow.
I’m coming up blank. The English carols I come up with (“What Child is This?”, “Good King Wencelas”) are still too recent. Maybe whoever wrote the original tune to Greensleeves before the music was recycled for “What Child Is This?”, although I think that’s usually credited as Traditional (i.e. we have no idea)
Greensleeves is 16th Century or earlier, so that’s out. All I’m coming up with is Ben Jonson, but he’s too early.
God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen is about the right age, but I don’t know who wrote that one.
Are you William Henry Jinglebells?
Heh. I am not.
Time’s up. I am, in fact,
Charles Jennens
who wrote the libretto for Handel’s Messiah, drawing upon both Old and New Testament texts: Charles Jennens - Wikipedia

With all the holiday stuff going on around here, I may only check in once daily for the next few days.
